4.2 5V head rebuild
I have some confusion on valve guide replacement on my 5V 4.2. The repair manual from Audi (via erWin) claims that the guides cant be replaced and the head must be scrapped, yet I see valve guides for sale at some of the parts places like Autohauz.
In spite of 160k miles on the motor, my valves themselves are still in spec (stem diameter), but the guides are badly worn. (The valve head moves about 3mm side to side) vs. the 0.8mm spec. The seals must do a heck of a job as the car doesn't burn oil yet.
Anyone had experience here?
Anyone know a machine shop the specializes in these heads?
P.S. Car is 02 A6 with AWN engine.
Thanks

I don't see valve guides listed for this engine in Etka. My guess is if you find any through aftermarket companies that the head would have to be machined to accept them. You should first call around locally to find a machine shop that has run into this. If you find one and feel they would take care of you, use them to do the work and to buy the guides for you since it would be through one of their sources. You may end up having to ship your heads off to get this work done. Start calling the machine shops.
