Default 4.2 Desirability

Well, this is like closing the barn door but I will go ahead and ask the questions anyway. Picked up a 2006 A6/4.2 last Saturday. I think the engine and car are fabulous but is the 4.2 really desireable? I know Audi sells way more 3.2s than 4.2s (I know the 4.2 is more $$$).

The car was certified so I should have another 2 years of warrantly...has 50K on it right now but was a corporate lease and the dealer did all of the maintenance on the car.

Thanks for any feedback...

Larry

I have had my 05 4.2 for nearly 4 years and it is a fantastic driving car. I think that it is desirable.

With the current economical climate, luxery cars also suffer. Just look at how much MB has just slashed from it's production.

Those with enough cash would probably buy a new A6 anyway.

So, those buying second hand probably want to save some cash and would opt for the 3.2

That's what I think anyway.

Also every car on teh market is like that, the bigger engine will always sell less. If money and operating cost is no object, the 4.2 is actually more desirable.

As an owner of a 2.7t.... I'd absolutely prefer the 4.2

Thanks guys! I had driven both the 3.2 and the 4.2 and felt like I would not be happy with the 3.2. Just not enough oomph with a full car, which is when I really need it.

Nah the 3.2L doesn't have enough power to satisfy the A6, its wonderfully fast in the A4 though. I remember it being slightly faster than my 01 S4 stock!
But i absolutely love the 4.2L motor, there are many variations of the motor, you have the updated version which is even more fantastic. I can happily report there hasn't been any major repairs needed on that engine since i have worked at the dealer. There is a TSB that requires pulling the engine for a coolant leak for the S4's 4.2L, but thankfully it doesn't apply to the 4.2L A6, i have no idea why though.

Yeah, I bet the A4 is very nice with the 3.2. What do you mean by the updated 4.2? The reason I ask is that they went to 350 HP in, what, 2007? But it is sweet regardless!

Now I am trying to sort out the lack of the trip computer! Been looking at the different forums and yes, they dropped the 'puter at some point. Now the big question is that I am having factory nav installed--supposed to be in this week. Will that give me the 'puter, new right stalk, and a better MMI display? Waiting to see what comes in with it.

The trip computer should be on all audi's, there should be a button on the bottom of the right stock that lets you toggle through options, or there should be a button on the clutster. As for the factory navigation, oh yeah, its a sweet set up. If you get lost with that nav system you shouldn't be driving.

As for the 4.2L, many different variations means some are chain driven like the S4's, i think yours is still belt driven, different engine design, head design, tuning, exhaust, intake manifold, etc. Just about everything on your 4.2L is Superior to the pre 04 model.

I know......but no button on dash, nothing on the right stalk either. Thanks for the info on the 4.2! When I get the Nav installed I will talk to the shop and get their story.
