Default 4.2 timing belt... can it wait?

I have an 02 4.2 with 71,500 miles on it. The local dealer is going to put in a new timing belt and waterpump for around $900. I was planning on getting this done ASAP, but they cant get it in for 2 weeks. I plan on going on a trip next week (1000 miles total) and I'm getting a bit paranoid about the belt. Should i find an alternate means of transportation, or should I be ok? Also, if i am careful not to alter the direction of gravity (as I enjoy doing so much in this car ), will that prolong belt life? Thanks

You should be fine but I would get it replaced as soon as you get back. It's better safe than sorry. You'll be cool for the trip though.

I think you will be just fine. The Bentley manual says an 02 4.2l should be changed at 105k so you are well below the recommended change interval. But most of us seem to have ours changed between 70-85k to be safe.

If you would like to take a peak under the plastic covers at the belt and see the condition that might help. About a month ago I helped spot a bad T/B this way. Take a peak before you start your trip. If you are going on a long road trip I would sugest putting in a fuel system treatment. I did onmy last trip and it worked great
