4 Rings!
ORIGINAL: NH_USA
LOL
Years ago, my first thought about the 4 rings was that it was an extension of the Borrmean rings used by the Ballantine brewing company. Since Audi is German, they were not happy with only 3 rings so they added another to show that their beer was better than the American beer. I realized that Ballantine was ale, not beer, but that didn’t affect my thought process because ale tends to be English and the Germans didn’t like them either. (Gennie Cream tops my list of ales!)
I came up with this opinion during a time I was “sampling” various brands of the beverages in question.
Go to Wikipedia and look up Audi to get the real info – meanwhile I’ll return to sampling beverages and see if I can get more enlightenment.

When I was younger, I had no clue what Audi's were. I saw 4 rings on a car while I lived in Britain and just assumed it was British. How wrong I was.
Okay so i lied to you guys about my BMW emblem story[&:]. This what was believed by many and to this day still is by many people But the real story is that the old Bavarian flag was blue and white checkered flag like pictured below. I found this out last night while watching a program on BMW on the National Geographic Channel. Im kinda mad haha i liked the first story better than the second one.

This is my favourite question and one that I have a lot of time for;
Auto Union is the company who used the four rings in the 20's and 30's on their Racing cars when Bernt Rosemeyer was one of their drivers against Alfa's and Mercedes etc etc. e.g. Fangio
The four rings are part of 4 previous separate compnies and they all joined as a UNION...Hence "AUTO UNION GMBH"
The four companies that were incuded into AUTO UNION were, D.K.W, Wanderer, Horch (made large fancy limo's that Hitler rode in)
and Audi.
Therefore Audi later has taken the four rings as a separate entityand the other companies are by and by.
D.K.W however has 3 piston engines mainly, two strokes and a coil per cylinder. The 1000c.c. SP coupe had a different set up as the Generator has an extended armature and the water pump was connected at the end of it, try to find one of them anywhere, there is only one in New Zealand that I know of. few in England and Germany

Being a previous BMW owner (and a lot of my family have and love BMW's) you were actually correct with the airplane propeller story, but the Bavarian flag thing is also true, they just used the colors.
