99 A6 2.8 Aux Fan not coming on after shutting down
My auxiliary fan will not come on after the car is shut down after a hard run(being run for more than 7 hours straight in 90+ degree heat). The fan does work when using the air conditioner and will cool the car down when in traffic. I have replaced the fan motor(becuase the fan was bad) as well as the relay and it still will not come on when it should once the car has been shut down. Looking for some ideas here. I do not believe that it is the Fan Contol Module, however I could be wrong.
Please help,
John

What makes you think it needs to run? The only car I have ever owned that turned the engine fan on while the car was off was my old Saab 9k. But my Audi has never done it. If you engine fan is working normally when the car is on, and the car is not overheating I don't see you having an issue.

I would be inclined to think that the fan would come, and that fluid would circulateon when the car is shut down and the temperature would start to rise.
You may be correct in that I do not need to be alarmed about this, however it is only as of late that I am getting into my car after extended driving periods that the temperature guage goes past the mid-way point. Once I start moving and kick on the A/C the temp goes back to normal.
Thanks,
John

dont think it has a run on fan Ive never heard it come on but did have some cars that needed that, the coolant cap has a relief valve built into it to prevent it building excess pressure

Would it be agreeable that it should come on automatically when the temp goes past the mid-way portion of the the thermostat range? Today I purposely did not have the A/C on and was in idle traffic for quite some time and the fan did not come on.

it should build up pressure which in turn switches the fan on and best way to check that is to run the engine up to temp then let it idle till the fan cuts in ( engines tend to heat up more at idle ) and standing similar to being in a traffic jam, one fan is the AC the other is for the coolant but they are linked when the engine gets very hot to speed the cooling process up

The fan definitely does not come on when sitting at idle even after the temp range on control panel goes past the mid-way point and starts to lean towards hot. Only after kicking on the A/C does it cool down.

check the fuses under the hood you will see 3 relays with 2 fuses on the top and 4 on the bottom # 3 from the left in over is the cooling fan but it does sound like you have a problem with the fan

I have bought the manual from Bentley, and it works, however not detailed enough for the novice mechanic like myself. Do you have a internet link that may show the exact location for this piece??
