Default A6

My car is stuck in park. My husband replaced the brake switch fuse, which was bad. You can hear the release when you step on the brake, but it still won't come out of park. Any ideas? My car is a 1998 A6 Quattro wagon.

Can you verify the brake lights are on when you step on the brake? If not, probably your brake switch is bad.

Oh, if the switch itself is fine, then the next thing to check is the ignition switch key lock solenoid. It is below the shifter selector lever cover.

might want to double check the connection on the brake switch and test it

to get to the switch you need to remove the panel under the steering wheel... you'll see the switch at the top of the brake light pedal

Defective Brake switch will not get your car stuck in PARK and you'd have other problems...

I think it is the brake switch. It is less than $20, so I would try that first. Remove the bottom of the steering column cover using torx bit, then replace the switch mounted on the brake pedal braket. If you want take the car to a shop, then you can start the car by turning the ignition switch about 1/4 turn without starting it, then move the shifter to between neutral and drive or park and reverse depending on which gear you want to get into. Start the car, and shift into drive or reverse.

Good Luck

The brake light switch onmy 1998 A6 Quattro wagon has four pins. After I removed the brake light switch the car was stuck in park. I replace the switch because it was giving an error code when using VAG-COM. When you install the new switch you must screw it in all of the way, before reattaching the wires. The switch adjusts to the correct position when you push on the brake, but only if it was inall of the way.
