Default Which A6 - 2.7t? or 4.2?

Greetings from windy golden colorado.

I am new to the forum and have narrowed my search down to 2 used A6. Both are 2002.

1. 2.7t, 6spd man, sport, cold weather pack, parksense, red ext, blk int and ONLY 18,000 miles. 1 owner - that moved to France 2+ and is not coming back. We know his brother who has driven it litely the while he has been gone - maybe 1500 miles over past 2 yrs. Car is immaculate - as it should be for only 18.5k. All records from local Audi dealer.

2. 4.2, auto/tip, cold pack, loaded. Crystal ext, blk inter. 44,000 miles and carfax 1 owner clean. this car is at a reputable use audi dealer.

Really looking for the pros/cons from you experts here on the forum. Car 1 they are asking $26k. Car 2 is $24.5k. I would likely buy an extended warranty for both as I know it will likely be used. Both cars will be out of OEM warranty this summer.

It seems the price is in line on the 4.2, and a wee bit high on the 2.7 although for the miles it's in line with KBB private party.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated in advance!!!

Depends on what you want to do to the car. I have the 4.2 and I would never go with another model A6. The performance is awesome and the body style is perfect. I would go with the 4.2. That's just my opinion.

If you want to chip it and do a lot of engine mods then don't go with the 4.2. If you want a car that needs no improvement, go with the 4.2. It's perfect as is out of the box. It needs no aftermarket parts to make it better.

from your post, the 2.7 has more "goodies" incorporated and less miles. i do love the power of the n/a 4.2, but if you like the toys the 2.7 has and the obvious red "I LIKE TO TAKE IT TO THE EDGE" color, you can upgrade the engine to better the numbers. if you just want to have a great cruising car/daily driver, the later would do perfectly. up to you in the end, do you want a great car to drive past rikkity crap that 'merka makes or do you want to hit the pavement with other performers? i wouldn't suggest it with a 6 series unless it was originally s, or you want to make one. if you want a great ride, audi delivers plain and simlple. how much grunt do you want to deliver to the road is you question to answer. lots of sites out there to research for what you want; either engine you go with. good luck, and congrats on taking a chance at excellence in automotives!

Not going to mod the vehicle. Just not a priority or necessity and want it for a fun, stylish daily driver. Also curious about the maintenance costs, and typical incurrences with either... Thanks guys for your input!

Is the 4.2 certified since it's from an Audi dealer? If so I would go with that one, since it'll have extended warranty on it from Audi. Also you get the wide-body, which looks so sick. As for maintenance the 4.2 will be less than the 2.7T because there are no turbos, but since it has higher miles that might be a toss-up (in about 20k miles you would want to change the timing belt and water pump, which isn't cheap).

I've owned both a 2.7T, but sold that and got the 4.2. I loved BOTH cars ver ymuch. The 2.7T felt more agile, quick off the line, and you can do more to tune the engine for more power gain. The 4.2 is simply raw power, and has those great fender flares. Looks fast standing still, but smooth/linear acceleration up to 100+. The car just keeps pulling and pulling, never giving up on power.

I guess it depends on what you want as a daily driver. Do you do a lot of city driving? Do you do more highway? Have you driven both cars??? Maybe the answer lies in your own experience with the cars. The 2.7T manual will be a great commuter, but if you don't mind the auto tranny, the 4.2 is a great car!

As far as price is concerned, I paid about $25k back in December for a 2002 4.2 sport with 31k miles. The 2.7T should retail for a bit less, but as you mentioned, VERY low miles.

Drive them both, and go with what your heart tells you is the right car for you. Either choice is a good one!!!

I have heard from a couple people that a6's have a bad time when they aren't driven regularly and a lot of things break that should not have or would not have broken if the car was driven and had more miles on it. They are both awesome cars either way you go, gas mileage is probably worse in the 4.2 but i'm not sure

guys:
There is a 2000 A6 4.2 V8 with 48k miles for 14k. Is this a good price ? What is the gas mileage on this and what maintenance should I expect soon.

I was also looking at 2001 2.7T with 58k miles, but this is audi certified and has one more year of maintenance. any ideas on gas mileage on this thing ?
