A6 4.2 vs. 2.7T Choose an Engine!
I'm sold on the A6 (2000-2004) as my next car, but I'm not sure which of the above mentioned motors to go with. They are pricing out about the same in similarly optioned cars, and if I knew the cr of the 4.2, I'd be able to know for sure if they both really need to run 93.
This will be my Daily, and I'm not looking to mod the car if that matters. MPG, mechanical issues, etc?

Love the look of the 4.2's fenders, and nothing beats that big V8 growl
but i agree with Kevin, if you want a car thats cheaper to mod (but not to maintain) get the 2.7
also, isnt the mpg better on the 2.7t? (food for thought considering rising gas prices)

Thanks for the input Kevin.
I have a couple of v8 Mustangs which cure the mod bug. I don't need to have 3 toys, so I'll be able to leave the Audi alone. Hopefully anyway.
Why is the maitenance more on the 2.7? I'm guessing the FI leads to more headgasket issues as well as having more moving parts, etc. I am curious to know what people are seeing in terms of mileage with each, I don't need something with 50mpg, but at the same time, I already have two cars that barely crack 20 on the highway.

gas price, reliability, mod and.....thats pretty much the difference 4.2 drink more(well..obviously, 2 more cylinders~) , more reliable but less mod, but on the gas part..it really depends on how you drive...some people gets 14L/100km (15ish MPG) on a srt8 but some people also gets 14L/100km (15ish MPG) on a Honda 4 cylinder. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH~~
my average fuel consumption is around...10.4L/100km (23MPG) for my 2.7T

on the 2.7T, mileage of the car really matters b/c of the problems with the turbos... basically the 4.2 is more durable and less expensive to maintain b/c there are no turbos and it also comes with more power stock (since you are not modding)
the 2.7t has a wider variety of mods available... the 4.2 is a bigger engine and i suppose it gets less mpg
if you are going to stay stock, i'd say the 4.2, plus nothing beats that throaty sound of a v8 esp. if you ever think of putting a good exhaust system on it (if you make an exception to just that, trust me it's worth it.)

Based on what you state your needs are, the 4.2 would be the natural choice.
The 2.7 fuel consumption is actually only marginally better than the 4.2. Ofcourse, I am referring to the official figures rather than any spirited driving.

based on your last line on the post i would go with the 4.2 even though I answered the poll differently.
If you are 100% sure you will not mod, then 4.2 is the way to go with acceptable power out of the box and the awesome wide body (wider fenders), the sexiest ***!
in a nutsheell
Stock to stock comparo:
Power/perf: 4.2 > 2.7T (SLIGHT though)
Weight/sporty feel/Handling: 2.7T > 4.2
Sound: 4.2 > 2.7T
Looks: 4.2 >>> 2.7T
MPG: 2.7T >> 4.2 many get 13-16mpg with the 4.2 and 19-23 with the 2.7T
Reliability: 4.2>2.7T but I know a 2.7T with 190k miles on original turbos. runs strong
MOD potential: 2.7T >>>>> 4.2
Now just add a $600 chip to the 2.7T:
Power/Perf: 2.7T > 4.2
Now just pick the criterias that are most important to you to decide..
