Thumbs down A6 C6 Xenon headlights are different colours

Hi peeps.

Just taken my car in for its annual MOT and it has failed as the two xenons are different colours...

One is very blue and one is a more yellow colour.

Any idea what might cause this? I don't really want to pay main dealer prices (£105 / hour) and am happy to attempt a DIY fix if it's not too complex, but where do I start? Bulbs, ballasts or somewhere else?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Mark

Id first swap ballast around. Remove headlights, take one ballast and move to blueish. If condition persist its bulb, I recomend bulbs in pairs. If condition does not persist its ballast. They can be cheap used But you run the risk of buying someone elses bad ballast.

Wouldn't you just swap bulbs first? At least on the C5, the ballast is on the bottom of the headlight enclosure and not very easy to get to at all.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Sorry, should have been clearer, the car is a 2008 model so is a C6. From what I can see, the ballasts are directly mounted on the rear of the bulbs so should be reasonably straightforward to get to.

Will take a look over the weekend.

Cheers,

Mark

Dark,
The item that you are refering to on the back of the blub itself is not the ballast, it is the ignitor, the ballast is mounted to the side of the headlight housing. It is the larger flat box if memory serves me right.

Hi coolguy,

You are absolutely correct. Fortunately, it was a faulty bulb. Had a bit of fun trying to source one on a Saturday but got there in the end - both bulbs replaced and colour harmony restored.

Thanks for the info and advice all...

Cheers,

Mark

I have a similar problem on our new-to-us '06 C6...where it appeared the passenger side light had been replaced. The passenger side lens was obviously newer and on the wall, provided a bluer/whiter light. The projector lens also appears to be clearer.

The driver side light reflected on the wall is weaker with a more yellow/red tint and the projector lens seems cloudy. We polished the outside lens and removed all oxidation etc. I then removed the bulb and attempted to clean the inside of the projector lens, but the low-beam blocking arm prevented access. Interestingly enough, the bulb had a worn area where the low-beam blocking arm was chipping away at the bulb glass. Cleaned the bulb, but the drivers side light still remains weaker and with more of a warm hue. I think I need to replace the bulb and the projector lens.

Replacing HID and Halogen low beam bulbs every 3 years or so is a great idea. They both lose output as they age.
