I am about to do the first oil change on my (new to me) 02' A6 3.0....

-Definitely using Synthetic Oil... probably Mobil-1

-What oil weight should be used?

Do a search on "oil". Lots of discussion.

You can't go wrong with Mobil1 0W-40 for the winter and 5W-30 or 40 for the summer. You may be able to run the 5W year-round since you don't have to worry about little bitty turbo bearings spinning real fast in cold weather.

I want to make sure to use the correct weight, I have noticed some lifter / valve ticking, which is a horrible sound I must say. Before going in to the shop an oil change is a must.

Well i'm running 5w-40 just in the winter because of the ocasional -30F temperatures up here in the Upper Peninsula (at school - MTU), it's next to impossible to cold-start your car with 10w-30 in temperatures that cold.

Mobile 1 Synthetic of course. 5w-30 wouldn't be a bad weight to put in, what is the climate like where you're at?

 

Starting using ELF 5-30 from the dealer and love it! The car loved it even more (after switching from Mobil1 0-40)

 

I use castrol syntec in 5w-40. Make sure the oil is VW compliant. It will say it on the back of the bottle. Use a good filter, Mann or Mahle.

 

Amsoil European Full Synthetic is the only way to go.
use a WIX or OEM filter.

the other "full synthetics" are only 51%
