I'm looking into getting a 2001 A6 QUATTRO. The thing is that I'll be using it mostly in the city and I heard that the 2.5 tdi is very good for that. Does anyone know how much diesel is it going to "drink" per 100km or how many mpg? I also wanted to have a REALISTIC comparison between all sorts of audi a6 engines, their power and REALISTIC fuel consumption in the city and on the highway. Is there any site that you could direct me to for that? Also what kind things should I pay attention to when buy an a6 with 2.8 or 2.7t from 2000/2001 and around 80000 miles (120000 kms) so I won't end up with a car that spends half the time in a workshop and will give me only a headache? Finally I wanted to ask if anyone could tell me if Audi has a similar system as bmw which allows to check if the milage on the dash is accurate or has been tampered with. I know that BMW computer records its miles independently of the meter on the dashboard. Is that the case with AUDI as well or is the readout from the dash? Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know much about the 2.5tdi, but...
The odometer is very difficult to tamper.
The 2.8 and 2.7 engines will need their timing belts changed now.
Any Audi is prone to have control arm and tie rod issues; have them checked.

I'm actually in Poland and was thinking of buying the car here, but this is a place where literally ANYTHING can be done to a car and by anything I mean ANYTHING and tampering with the cars milage here is is a problem. That's why I need to know if the values are taken off the dash or are stored digitally on the computer.

The odometer reading is stored within the ecu, so, unless somebody knows how to get into the ecu and tamper with the mileage, I think you're OK. I suppose it can be done, but what a hassle just to say the car has low miles. Besides, 80K miles (120K km) is about right for a 2000 - it's on the high side, so if someone were to tamper with the mileage, I would think they would want to make the number much lower. I think an 80K mileage figure is legitimate for a 2000.

 

Well, that's the problem that I'm facing with buying a car. Since there're so many companies that use these sort of cars as company cars and sometimes they rack up even 300000km in 2-3 years, many people buy them cheap (around 5-6000 Euros), change the milage and sell them for around 12000 ie as a low milage car (and somehow they manage to loose the service book along the way). That's why I'm sceptical about buying one here. I might as well go to Germany and get one myself, just that it's a lot of hassle. Any idea about where can I get realistic information about engine types, accleration and fuel consumption?
