Default A6 vibration

2002 A6 can ot stop wheel vibration when driving about 65 to 75 mph?
Factory wheels same new tires same problem as after market wheels and tires.
Had the wheels balanced about three times no resolution.
Not a luxury ride nor a safe feeling driving this car with this issue.
Any ideas??

This can be a couple of things. I had that happen when I had a lug nut loose, more than likely you have on wheel that has been warped because of an accident or running it into a curp. You might what to go to an audi specialist to have them take a look but my guess it's your rim. You want to check but I had a problem with that in a honda. My audi rides like a feather at 120 mph. I actually run a little too smoth because I will catch myself at 100 mph way to easily. I hope this help.

i would check your control arms and tierod ends. if there is any play in them the high speeds could cause a vibration. my 01 a6 had a slight vibration at 70 to 80 on the front left and it was a control arm.

You should check your hub bearings and the hub bolt, it may be loose. You can check this by raising the car off of the ground and pulling on the tire. Play at 3 and 9 o'clock is normal but if there is play at 12 and 6 o'clock it could be a bearing or tierods.

Had my 4.2 giving me the same problem for months. It was driving me crazy! I had put brand new Pilot Sport A/S on all 4's and I kept thinking it was the tires! Ended up being a combination of 2 things. Tie rod ends were spent. (My mechaninc could move the hub on the rack with his hands) and I ended up getting a high end Road Force balance on my big 255/17 rims. Ever since, its been a posh ride. I would start with the tie rods if I were you. Its not that costly if you have an independent do them.

my car (98 a6 2.8q) is now shaking on the front right. when you say tighten the hub bolt would this have any relation to the rotor spinning in place? I replaced the front brake lines and i noticed that the rotor can spin by hand (with the wheel and lugs off ) without the hub itself spinning. My apologies for the lack of a good description, but is this normal? i have uneven wear un my front right tire too so i was thinking alignment problems. any thoughts? thanks

I have been having similar problems with my '02 4.2.

The vibrations do not occur all the time, but sporadically. Sometimes the vibrations occur slightly at as low as 45, but then it will not begin until higher speeds such as 65-70 and all the way up to 80-90.The vibrations will then increase when I apply pressure to the brakes, then lessen once the brakes have been released, but only to the point in which they were vibrating before applying pressure to the brakes. Sometimes I can go from point A to point B without getting any vibrations. WhenI use the term vibration it could be better explained by saying shaking thansayingminor vibrations. An alignment was done and the wheels have been balanced and rotated. I have also rotated and used the spare to help single out any bent or warped wheels, but no matter where I put the wheels I get the same vibration/shaking. Before and of this was done the front left tire was worn considerably more than the others. I had that tire replaced. Still using the stock 17" alloys with the Continental Sporttrac 255/40/17ZRs

Is this more likely to be a wheel/tire issue, a tierod/CV issue or quite possibly a caliper/braking issue?

I bought this car a 59k and it is now at 62k. In the maintenance book all the routine maintenances were done except 50k and now 60k. Money is a little tight right now, so I'd like to know if I should shoot for something specific, or should I just get the 50k service done? How much does the 50k service run? 60k? 50k and 60k combined? I am new to Audis so any help is appreciated.

I just had my 40K mile service completed and asked the dealer to check cause of vibration felt through steering between 35-70mph. Inspected all suspension components and no issues. After test drive and attempt to Road Force balance, dealer concluded I had a bent left front rim (17" 5-spoke alloy) that was cause of problem. Traded with spare, rebalanced all wheelsand that seemed to correct the problem (car has brand new tires all around with less than 2K miles on them).Dealer said spare rim was straight and balanced fine. Car was riding VERY smooth when I left the dealership this evening and I thought the problem was solved. But by the time I got home (25 miles), slight vibration began again. What is up with this?!?! mine does at around 55-60. im told by the dealer its due to the servotronic steering mechanism

Dropped by an indy shop today and one of the mechs took a spin with me. We concluded that at least one of the front (left suspected) calipers is seizing up a bit which has now warped at least one rotor. I am not that surprised this is the case as I did some hard braking from 110 down to 80 on the freeway a few weeks ago. These are the stock calipers/rotors AFAIK.

Q: Isn't this the perfect opportunity to upgrade rotors and brakes?

A: No, not just yes, but HELL YES!

I will conduct research now, but I am open to any suggestions.
