the stupid CEL came back on on the way home today. any more ideas?

Lots of them, there are a lot of possiblities here so im only gonna give you advise for the visual problems.
I want you to check behind the right front wheel, there should be some evap lines running from the rear of the car to the engine bay and they pass right behind the right front wheel. What i want you to check is if there is any damage to the undercarrige behind the wheel that might have broken the plastic evap line.

is there any schematics or anything on here so i can see where all these lines go?

there is no damage to any of the undercarriage. i read something about the gas tank filler neck being plastic, and it cracking or something. is that a possibility?

It is plastic but the NEVER go bad, i replaced one before and it didn't do S***. All thats left is to do a complete visual inspection of the engine bay for any cracked lines, and check theN80 valve that sits on top of the air filter box (there should be one line in and one out) if it looks white, dis-colored, or damaged replace it. Other than that you would need avag-com orfactory scannerto manually activate the LDP pump (leak detection pump) and clamp off hoses one by one to find the leak. The LDP pump is also another mis-diagnosed evap problem, if someone tries to sell you one tell them to shove it!!!
I really can't help you after that if you don't have a scan tool.

alright i have the scanner that i used to scan for codes. can i use this at all to help me find the leak. everything under the hood looked fine. thanks.

No, a generic scanner can't activate individual motors and modules, like the vag-com and VAS scanners can, if you can't find anything wrong visually then take it to the dealer.

Alright so you went from a large leak to a small leak, I would replace that N80 valve thats on the near the air box, because thats the major cause of small evap leaks.

is that a part i can find locally, and estimated cost?
