Default Anyone use laser thermomoter on tranny pan?

I have one of those laser themometer guns at work and was wondering if anyone has used it to measure the bottom of the tranny pan when they are refilling the oil. I would think you could restart the car and let the fluid get up to temperature and test it this way.

Shouldn't the metal pan be very close to the oil temperature?

Saves me buying another Audi tool.....

Well the temperature sensor for the trans oil is located on the cooler, so you may be reading a couple degrees higher from the pan, so i would give it 1-2 degrees difference in the + side when you change the fluid, you CAN'T LET IT PASS 34 degrees celcuis when filling it. If you don't get it all in by that temperature it will be underfilled and start spilling out before you need it too.

How many cars have you looked at lately? You might be surprised how many are in the no-dipstick camp.

BMW are in the no-dipstick camp too.

What I do is drive around for a bit to make sure the tranny is hot as hell. then raise the car and put it on 4 jack stands. Wait about 30 minutes and touch the pan with your hand. If it's too hot to the touch then wait some more; when you can touch the pan with your hand without yanking back from in pain from intense heat but you can feel that the pan is indeed hot, then commence to drain the pan.

Many american automakers don't have dipsticks as well, FORD also doesn't use them since about 05 or so.
You should see the new audis! They don't even have an ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK! Its all read by the MMI electronically.

After seeing the dipstick oil commercial I can understand why Audi eliminated it!!
No self-respecting German would want to be hit in the butt by a Scotsman with a dipstick!

As for using your hand to check the temp -- I belive there are better things you can do with your hand.

PS - It isn't hard to use VagCom ----

PSS - I think it is an IR thermometer - not laser.
