Brake System problems
Hey everyone,
I just gotThree questions about my 156,000mi 2001 audi a6
1. Are there rear brakes on a 2001 Audi A6?
2. On my dash, it shows a picture of a yellow circle with a parenthesis around it, (O) what does that mean?
3. For some reason, when my when I step on the brakes, it doesnt really stop all the way but does really slowly, the car only stops when the brake pedal is all the way to the floor, what could be the problem? Snipped ABS?
Thank you very much.

hm...
1. every car have front and rear brake that for sure..
2. I have to check my owner's manual for that..it's in my car but I think it's something wrong with the brake..as you are experiencing
3. that sounds like a big problem to me..if the ABS have problem your dash should show ABS instead of the O and Parenthesis, and even if the ABS got problem..it just that you can lock your wheels...not unable to stop...I strongly suggest you get it check...

Sounds like you may just need new brake pads. If you know an independent auto mechanic that specializes in Audi you may want to pay them a visit so they can take a look at the rest of your brake components to verify if anything is permanently damaged.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Thanks for the help, I do know an audi tech, but you know how the question just bothers you until you know.. because he is on vacation for a bit. I dont know, maybe it is the rear brakes, but I know its pretty hard to stop sometimes...
Yup its the low break pad indicator. I just had mine go off and i was in the same situation as you because I don't have a manual. Only the front pads have sensors not the back. If yours squeak then you might need new pads, mine are doing that and I'm planning on getting them replaced. I heard Hawks are pretty good. Just remember to not forget about them otherwise you will do damage to the rotors. Both front and back wear out pretty evenly so I suggest replace both. Mine are also showing sort of the same symptoms, I don't have to press them all the way but I do need to press on them a little harder than usual. The car also feels like its cruising more, like gliding.
Prepare to spend a lot of money
It sounds as if you need rear pads and rotors and front pads. The rears because it sounds like metal agaist metal and the front's because of the light.
Do a search on this site for people that discussed doing their brakes - you'll learn that the rear pistonshave to be turned as they are pressed in and sometimes the calipers get hung up and need to be replaced. Going to the dealer can cost youyour right leg and left arm and going to a poor shop can cause you wish you went to a dealer. DIY is easy as long as you know what your doing.
By the way - Front pads generally wear out twice as fast as rears because they do most of the work.
