The winter months are here and I have realized that my heater does not work on my 96 A6 quattro. The fan and the climate control display all work, but no Heat comes out. I have checked all fuses.... and tried it on every setting you can.. no matter what no heat comes out. When I bought the car I knew that the air conditioner did not work, but that just needs to be recharged.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with the heater..... driving around using only heated seats when it is 30 degrees out sucks!

 

You probably need your heater core replaced. The heater core actually controls the ac and the heat in the a6, which may be why your heat nor ac works. Hopefully that helps out your cold situation.

 

It's never happen on my Audi but has on my other cars and I have started with the thermostat! Easy cheap fix. If that doesn't help probably heater core.

 

so i have done some research on heater cores..... I found out they fail 2 ways. If they are clogged or if they are leaking. I have no coolant leaks.... besides a hairline crack in my coolant resivior, so it must be that the lines are blocked.

I know that a core is only about 60 bucks, but the installation seems liek apain in the ***. Is there anyway to unclogg the system?

 

I was gonna say the same thing, check the thermostat. If your deforsters dont work, then your heater core is gone.

 

ya the defrosters do not work.... I am possitive it is the heater core..... can I flush it or somthing?

 

the tubes feeding the heater core are definetely feeding hot fluid to the core...... so I think it is somthing electrical.... any ideas?

 

Ok ... sorry for all these post about my heater but I really want to get it working for the winter. I found out that there was a diognostic that you can run on your climate control. The codes that came up pointed to the Central flap regulator that lets the heat from the heater core into the car. It is currentyly shut. The one code that came up said it will not automatically open, only manually. I know to get to the acctuator I need to take apart the dash..... so when I get there is there ant way to manually open and leave it open, just to get the heat out? Or will I have to get a whole new unit?

Anyone who has done this job please help me....this has been so frustrating.

 

Just erase the fault and run the heater. The line going in and out of the heater core is right behind the battery going into the bulkhead, feel both hoses and check to see if they are both hot.
If its warmer on one hose then the heater core is probably blocked, take off both hoses and use compressed air to blow out the heater core (NOTE: you may take a bath in coolant doing this)
If thats not it check the fault code again to see if the flap motor fault has come back, you may need to replace the motor. You have to pull the entire dash board for that BTW.
