Burnning smell and Black goop on cats, 96 Avant
I have had my 96 Avant Quattro for about a month now and have run into my first problem.
Im not sure of the cause but I will have a burnnning smell of oil, I notice it when geting out the drivers side, I have a black type burnt goop on my cats, so im assumeing its that burning off I think it can be tranny fluid but its really hard to tell.
I have read on audiworld that it can be the rear tranny seal, if so what am I looking around to pay an indipendent audi shop to do the seal. If thats not the seal is there another that can be leaking, I am going to have a shop look at it probly for an estimate and whats wrong but I would really like some insite before going to one. Thanks

Rear trans seal or front propshaft seal. I like to call it the front propshaft seal but most people will have no idea what im tallking about althouth i think thats audis official term for it. Most people get rear trans seal thou. price will probably be anywhere between 150 and 600.
Hm ok I will go for $300, $400 but for $600 I will do that on my own. I can do it but would rather save the headacke for the shop. My dad has a garage but I have gotten rather hesitant on doing tranny work since I had to replace the tranny in my 93 Caddy Seville. That was loads of fun.
If so what am I looking foward to, do I have to drop the tranny. A link to a DIY would be good if someone has one, please.

Pretty sure you wont have to remove the tranny to replace the seal. There should be a plastic acces cover on the rear of the transmission on the bottom. Its held in by a c clip. Inside the acces cover youll have to remove another c clip to remove the rear trans flange. Of course youll have to remove the driveshaft to get the flange off. You may have to disconnect part of the exhust and some heat shilds as well. Once you get the flange off the seal is right there.
Oh also I have a link from the A8 section, is it the same procedure.

I don't understand which one of the three it is though at the very bottom of the list.

Alright, I thought the VW was the same, Where is the plug to check the fluid levle, I don't exactly know when I can get this done yet so I would like to atleast keep toping it off when it gets low.
