Default to buy or not please help me decide

Hello all I am looking at a 02 A6 2.7T here is my only concern with this car it has a lot of miles on it 278k. the car its self looks great the interior very good for age. I say this all from pictures at this point wanted to do a little research before making a 200 mile drive to look at it in person. after talking to owner he tells me it has been well maintained and runs and drives great had timing belt changed last 36k ago only thing he says is wrong with car is alternator needs replaced.

My son has a 98 A6 s line 2.7 no turbos has 200k plus we just did timing bel water pump and pulleys as well as thermostat and alternator on so i know what it takes to change it no problem there. just wondering if the 2.7 will go over 300k or should i pass on it. he is asking 1,700.00 for it.

Your son is prob the 2.8 engine that one is more reliable and easier to work on. I'll prob pass and not get it, 278k miles is lot
I mean one thing is to have the car and get to that mileage but another to get a car with it already cause from there on you don't know what will break next? Tranny, turbos, etc unless the owner already replaced all those things then maybe

yeah I am leaning hard against it but I also have a whole none turbo car setting here that has rod knock at 85k but good trans. as for the sons car no it is the 2.7 his did have new trans at 185k. From my understanding the turbos have under 75k on them will learn more about it tonight. wanting to get vin for carfax to. and keep in mind I can do any repairs myself I have never paid yet to have a car fixed in 49 years and i wont start now lol. Body wise no problem son is a painter and body guy. so should I go look at it what would would you all suggest I check out what is the most common issues with these cars.

If you like the car: get it.

Since you are able to fix body. Anything is repairable, it a matter of time and money put into it. You may have to invest more than the cost of the vehicle if you desire the type of performance a 2.7T (acceleration, handling etc.) All the wear and tear stuffs may have to replace to make it the power it once has.

To have that high of a mileage, the owner must have taken care well to last that long. Good Luck!

FYI: I put 297K on my 88'VW, still have it, just a side project... one day

Almost 300k is a lot of miles and you will have continual maintenance and repairs. It depends on your threshold for inconvenience and $$$. I have 231k on mine and while I consider it reliable, stuff fails. I did the alternator back at 75k and the fuel pump just recently. Cats went and the replacement Billy Boats still code; the SAIU and the headlight washers are disconnected. You'll note I had to replace the clutch and FW soon after I chipped it. It is still my preferred winter and long distance driver. However, when the turbos go (and they have been leaking for about 2 years) I have a tough decision -- invest another $3-4k or sell it cheap and "invest" in a newer A4. As much as I love the A6, I am leaning towards the latter even though I hope to break the 250k barrier before that happens.
