Buying a 2001 2.7T Need a little help
Hey all,
Im finally getting back into an audi and have a few questions regarding the 2001 2.7T I bought. I need to get new tires on it but it has the 18" RS6 wheels so I need to get 245/45R18's I live in colorado so I am wanting to get an all season performance tire. So far I am leaning towards the Eagle GT's because of the price. I am able to find them for about 800 mounted and balanced. Since I am a college student price has a lot to do with my decision.
Are the eagle gt's a good route to go? Anything else going to be cheaper and still good quality?
Lastly the previous nowner blew the front speakers so I am needing to replace them. It has the bose system in it. What size speakers are they up front and is there anything special I need to do when Im installing it since it is the bose system?
Thanks in advance for all the help!

Don't have enough experience in the tire department to make a suggestion but as for the Stereo, Check out www.crutchfield.com and plug in your vehicle specifics. It should list all the pertinent sizes and models that will be direct replacements. They are generally a bit high on price but an excellent source for information and comparison. There techs are very knowledgeable and helpful on the phone lines as well. I don't feel badly for using them for info after spending over $5k on a TV and surround sound setup last year... Good Luck
The Bose speaker system really sucks.
I would highly suggest NOT replacing the speakers with either new/used Bose ones.
I did this in my 01 1.8tqm, and they blew like 4 months later. I think its the harsh cold here, it screws with the glue on the speakers.
Anyway, heres the writeup for what you SHOULD do - btw the new bose speakers are VERY VERY pricey from the stealership, do not buy from them under any circumstances.

I've been happy with my Pirelli P6 Fourseasons. We have a fair amount of ice/snow in western MI (110" last winter) and they worked real well in bad conditions. I'm equally pleased with the summer driving. I drove the second set for just under 60k miles and am on the 3rd set. They are rotated every 5-6k miles as part of the purchase package. I'm running these at 40 psi, which is higher than the last set, but the tread is wearing evenly at 12k miles.
I'm no expert in wheels/tire ratio, but the size you have on right now (and you look to buy) seems to be "odd", or not the right one to preserve the same rotational diameter the car came with.
For the "Plus two" size you have (18 inch wheels), you need either of:
235/40-18
245/40-18
255/40-18
Discounttiredirect.com has the Eagle GT @ $ 145, same price with ContiExtremeContact, which has a better UTQG rating than the Eagle (540 - 50,000 miles vs. 400 - no tread life given).
On the same note, Pirelli's P6 Four Seasons is $ 10 cheaper ($ 135), with the same UTQG (400) as Eagle.
They have free shipping, so either $ 540 (Pirellis) or $ 580 (Eagles, Contis), you can find a recommended installer on their "state list" to do it for less than $ 260/$ 220 you've been quoted.
In any case, tires for 18 inch wheels are nearly double or/and double than what is available for my 15 inch wheels, or even your original 16 inch wheels.

Chefro,
Thank you veyr much for the help. I have been looking everywhere online and shipping was killing me every time. Thanks for the suggestion of discounttiredirect. I think I am going to pull the trigger on the Conti's.
You are also correct. They are 245/40R18's sorry for the confusion.
THANK YOU for the help though.

Oh, you're very welcome!
I would have thought that everyone knows about DTDirect. In 99.9 % of the cases they come up on top with the best prices.
tires-easy.com (Delticom) is another good source, although they very seldom had a free shipping promotion.

Honestly I have never had to buy tires since previously I worked at Sears and I just would get them through there. After doing a bunch of research I have settled on either the Eagle F1 AS or the contiextremecontact dws you suggested. the eagle are 27 more per tire. Is it worth it?
If I were in your position and willing to pay even more than the $ 145/tire, probably I would rather go with the Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum - at $ 171 ($ 10 cheaper than that Eagle F1), with 600 UTQG and 60,000 mile expectancy.
Just read the reviews and look at the "consumer rating" for both, compare and draw your own conclusion.
By the way: I have Contis PremierContact on my C4 and after 5,250 miles still look brand new. I'm more than pleased with their quality.

Chefro,
Thanks again for the input. I actually looked into the Kumho's because of the reasons you listed. After reading quite a few reviews I decided to pass on them. Mainly becuase of increased tire noise and horrible snow driving. Obviously with a performance all-season I am not expecting that much in the snow but I want to be able to daily drive it even when it is snowing. I have decided to deal with the 2 week wait and get the ContiExtremeContact DWS because of the reviews and articles on it. According to those they are very quiet, very responsive, and great in the snow. I went ahead and ordered them this week so they will be here shortly. Thank you very much for the advice. I really appreciate it!
