C5 intermittent no crank, no start

This morning on the way to work i stopped for fuel, when i tried to restart it I had to cycle the ignition to start position several times, it started. On lunch the car wouldnt start period, I had a battery light, so I checked my voltage, I had adequate voltage to crank (12.36V) and shortly after that check I cycled the key again and it started, as soon as it started running, I checked my charge back voltage and my alternator was putting 14.36 back into the battery, my mechanic tells me its an alternator problem, but I have worked on cars my whole life and usually generators dont give or warning or magically fix themselves, Im thinking ignition switch going bad, but I did just have the timing belt service and I wondering if its a simple issue of a loose connection at my starter or something, anyone had this problem///////please advise

Is it cranking or not cranking at all? If it is not cranking at all, then it most likely is the ignition switch. Another thing to check is the ground cable.
