Default can you damage differential w/ t. fluid change?

audi a6 2000 2.8L auto.

originally took my audi in because the tcm was shot, the mechanic reprogrammed it, i am guessing he just downloaded new software. at the same time he changed the trans fluid and filter. well the tcm is still acting up and as soon as i got the car back it was making a new sound, a high pitched whining in idle which gets louder as it moves into a new gear. the mechanic told me it is the differential which is bad. is it possible he could have damaged it by changing the trans fluid? i'm confused because it wasn't making the sound before i took the car in. i'm taking it to a new shop thur. and will reply with what they tell me. thanks in advance for the advice. this form has really helped me - andy

The Idiot most likely did not fill it all the way. It is a complete PITA to fill. You need to start the car on a cold day run it through the gears while on jack stands. then crawl under it with it running and pull the plug. Then you gravity feed pre warmed fluid into it while someone monitors the transmission temp via VAG-COM. It is not for amateurs and you really need to get the hang of it.

However your in dire need ASAP so if I was in your position I would either have it flat bedded to a GOOD EUROPEAN shop (not Audi, they suck at it too) OR run the rear tires up ramps so the car is pitched forward and put some more in while it is running that way the transmission is pulling the fluid up into itself leaving more room in the reservoir . It takes AUDI fluid, ESSO or I used Pentosin. Not cheap you will also need a pump (any auto store has the cheap plastic pumps like for a 1 gallon soap dispensor) or try blauparts.com or get a long hose and have some one stand outside and squeeze the bottle for you

You should consider buying a Vag-Com and a bentley manual.

The noise you explained starts loud then quiets down. If it were the diff it would get louder and louder not quiet down it just spins faster and faster. You have low fluid in the transmission. Here is why, When you are in first the valves send fluid to that gear, as you shift to second the valve sends fluid to that gear however you still have fluid in first gear as well. as the fluid returns from first it adds to the reservoir. It will also quiet down as it gets hot because the fluid expands as it gets hot. I would at least shove another PINT in there try it if it still makes noise put in another.
