Cat converter
2002 A6-2.7 turbo, 96k miles....Check engine light is on.Has been intermittent. No change in performance...Fault code is catalytic converter..Mechanic states that replacing both cat converters will cost approx $2600. How hard can it be? Are there after market products that work just as well as genuine Audi parts?? Should sensor be replaced at same time? I have seen some converters on Internet (Eastern) for about $340 each. Also saw Eastern converter for less than $70...
The eberspacher cats that come from the factory are high flow cats and are just about the best cats you can buy unless you get a high performance replacment. If you bought a cheap set the performance would probably go down slightly. As for changing them you only have to do one but the other one is probably not far behind so changing both would be the best idea. As for replacing them yourself its a nightmare on a 2.7T. The easiest way to remove them is to lower down the rear subframe and let the trans hang down and you might have to remove some other crap, be glad its not a 3.0L because you almost have to removethe entire damn transmission to get those buggers out.
Paying a grand or more for cats (each) is financial stupidity. Go to magnoflows site or talk to John at hottexhaust.com and you can get aftermarket high flow cats (very good quality and performance) with the O2 sensors etc. This has been the best course of action for others with this problems that I have talked to. Check it out before you waste $$ at the dealer.
or even better...get a nice set of downpipes or even turn ur factory ones into piggie pipes...which is basically gutting the precats which is what the sensors pick up anyway...and get a chip to turn off the rear o2 sensors....plus ull get a huge performance upgrade
see, the thing with our pipes is that the cats are a part of a single pipe thats also a downpipe. this is why its stupid expensive. what you can do is get just the cats and have them cut out your old ones and weld the new ones in. most muffler shops can do it and it should be a hellova lot less than 2600 bucks
