Cel flashing, car stuttering, sulfur smell - help!!
Jackmup, as stated before - I only received two codes in all. P0302 - Cyl 2 misfire and P0421 - Cat converter. However I'm not worried about the 4021 as that is/would be a result of a failed coil or ICM malfunction - also hence why I had the sulfur smell lol
switch your no. 1 cylinder with the number 2 if the misfire moves it's your coil and your new used coil too. if it stays trace your wires back a little looking for any breaks or burns if they are OK then what the heck the ICM is gonna crap out soon anyway right. Better proactive then reactive.
Ok - little update. Today I had the time to spend and take everything apart down to the plugs. I examined all coil wires and noticed no rips/tears/signs of aging. I then pulled the old CPs and examined them - not noticing anything in particular that could visually suspect failure; however my 6 new CPs came in yesterday, so I figured I'd put the new ones on and save the old ones. (Always good to have back up! lol). Pulled the spark plugs and examined them, also re-checking my gap settings. Some of them seemed to have a little larger gap than others (ranged from 0.30-0.40 b/t all 6) so I regapped all of them to 0.28 (they are Pulstar's and I have a 93 APR chip and I've read on here many chipped owner's use 0.28). Reinstalled the plugs, tightening to spec (22), installed new coil packs, and reattached everything (MAF, airbox, etc.) (Inspected everything as I was doing this - all looked good). Started her up and at first she was idling fine - then all of a sudden it started sputtering again. Not as bad as before, but was still there. Ran OBD II again, and this time got the P0300 code, not the P0302 code. I have the new ICMs in the mail as we speak...if they don't fix the problem, I will then suck it up and bare the drive to Audi lol

Your on it, I would bet it's the ICM. The shifting misfire code from cyl to to multiple is tell tale that the ICM is screwed. Make sure you use the di-electric grease and clean up the pins though. They get a powdery film on them everyone calls moss. That film reduces conductivity and will cause misfires and eventually cause the electrical parts to fail. The grease does nothing to encourage conductivity just keeps the weather out (salt etc...) and prevents moss.
I like NGK plugs because they seem to be good performers. I have had a few champions that were junk and Autolites don't light up out of the box. But no prob with NGK.

Happy 2010 everyone! I just want to thank you all for following through this with me and just say I appreciate all of your help/advice/inputs!
Jim - you think the Pulstar's have crapped out on me already? They have less than <10k on 'em, and yes I also love NGK - they are what I had before "upgrading" to the Pulstar's. That's a real bummer b/c I spent over $100 on the Pulstar's after doing so much research on them and people swearing what great plugs they were!
I guess I could swap NGK's back in - I still love them so it's not really a loss to me
Jackmup, so you and I are on the same page then - I am REALLY hoping the new ICMs fix her. If not - I will be lost on where to go next. Not really sure how to test fuel injectors and such...If the ICMs don't fix it, and putting the NGK plugs back in don't fix it - I'm just going to have to suck it up and call my indy guy on advice..at least he's $40/hr cheaper than Audi lol

Well, I went to advance auto last night and bought 6 brand new NGK silver platinum plugs (figured you're right, hell with the Pulstar's - stick to what you know works and works damn well!) Threw 'em in and was running better, but still sputtering a little bit. The crank was powerful and she roared to life though!
However, I fixed her today after my 2 ICMs came in and I was able to swap 'em out. Absolutely no sputtering during idle - which I let last for 15 mins, leaving the OBD II scanner hooked up the entire time - no codes but she still needed a drive cycle completed for all 11 monitors to relearn themselves. So I took her for a drive and she ran beautifully! As smooth as I remembered - I've been borrowing a F-150 and a Nissan Sentra now, mind you! LOL NOTHING was like getting back behind the wheel of my baby - makes you fall in love all over again with Audi engineering! Anyhow - 15-20 min drive later, scanner hooked up the whole time, pulled no codes, light turned green indicating all monitors a-go, and she was back to life! I thank everyone for their help and advice - I couldn't do it without great guys (& girls!) like yourselves - Thank you.
