CHANGING RIMS....

CHANGING RIMS....
I want to change my rims and have been looking for a set for some time....
my current rims are stock 16x7 with 205/55 and an offset of 42
i am looking at some rims that are 17x7.5 with 225/45 (which will not mess up my speedo) but the offset is at 53, is that too high?
can there be problems? i understand mostly everything when it comes to rim specs except offset....
and also can someone tell me the minimum and maximum offset i can use if i consider any other rims which will have a different offset?
thanks

RE: CHANGING RIMS....
Offset is the distance between the mounting surface of the wheel (which contacts the hub) and the center line of the wheel. All wheels have offset, even if it is zero. To determine the center line of the wheel, you find the exact middle of the wheel by physically measuring the actual mounting surface of the tire (usually bead to bead).
+35 or +45?

Thanks joetm for thw offset max and min
i kinda know what offset is but it just always messes me up for some reason, i know it's mounting surface to imaginary center line...
so what you're saying is that i can't mount the 53 offset on? would it rub? stick out? or is it possible to use spacers or something else?

RE: CHANGING RIMS....
actually the bigger the offset, the more the rims will be tucked in.... the less the offset, the more they'll stick out... right???
w/o worrying about the brake calipers... can 3/4 inch tuck-in be a problem? is there any space to go in, at least an inch? or should i use spacers? which i've heard is not good.

RE: CHANGING RIMS....
i dont see a problem if your not going to be rubbing the inside of your wheel well ... but it would probably look goofy if your rims were tucked in and didnt completely fill the wheel well ... ehh ive always stayed away from spacers ... im sure they wouldnt design and market something if it "wasn't good" but you never know ive heard mixed things on them ... and you really have to consider the fact that your paying good money for wheels and you should just buy the proper rim that will fit good
i have 19x8.5 and they are not a problem i have 35mm offset ... they completely fill the well perfectly

RE: CHANGING RIMS....
alright thanks joetm... hope it'll work, the gentleman selling them has been very helpful
butthe more close to oem specs, the less the change in handling... and i've also heard spacers have a negative effect on parts
i'll probably head over to his place and try one on the front and see if it'll work...
