check engine light...
OK, now I guess I am an official Audi owner... got my 1st check engine light today. I recently purchased a 2000 A6 4.2 with 66k on the clock. The car seems to be running fine, nothing obviously inoperable. The only thing that I can think of is during my pre-purchase inspection at the Audi dealership, two items of note appeared:
1. "found sporadic faults for low voltage (old weak battery?)" (the voltage meter in the car is reading at 14)
2. "misfires from low fuel or running out of fuel"
What are somethings that I can be checking for, or could be setting off the check engine light before I have to dig deep (the first of many times I'm sure) and head to the dealership?

P1423

Should I post this in tech as well?

Those are secondary air injection system codes.
P1411 is Bank 2 restricted flow and P1423 is Bank 1 flow too low.
Your problem is either a failing air injection pump (common problem), a bad vacuum line to the valves, or leaky feed line. It is possible but highly unlikely that both valves have failed.

I don't know about the 2000 A6
Sounds like you need to invest in a repair manual.
I would check the vacuum lines befroe spending $ on a new pump but if get that far call Chris Semple at Force Five in Concord NH for new and used prices. 603-223-6700.

I second the check vacuum lines. Most of the time its a vacuum issue on these engine. Just follow the vacuum lines from the two round valves bolted to the rear of the heads. Also follow the larger pipe. It will lead to the secondary air pump, which should be under the airbox.

RE: check engine light...
I am planning on tracing the vacuum lines this afternoon, I did so briefly, and I think that I have a leak coming from the valve on the drivers side under the coolant reservoir. How difficult is it to remove the two valves on the back of the cylinder heads to clean? Also, I will have to remove the belly pan to access the air pump and check those lines, correct? Will the CEL shut itself off once the problem is addressed, or will I have to reset it? I purchased some rubber vacuum line from Autozone, will this work, or will I have to find some of the OEM braided stuff? I promise that I am ordering a Bently manual this week, but until then...
Thanks for all the help!!!
