I am trying to fix major oil leak at front end of car.
1999 Audi A6 2.8L 30V
I saw a post listed w/pics that some one had the same oil leak i have.
They said it was main crankshaft seal and fix it.
I am under way trying to fix my leak but they did not say how this crank shaft gear is removed for the timing belt.
So rather then doing something wrong i though i would ask first if any one could please help .
I have done searches and do have manual and am coming up empty.
I also do have tools 3391 and 3242 .

I suspect front main crank seal is similar to that of the 2000 2.7L.
Main crank seal is located aft of the crank timing gear. Here's 2 links showing the gear & location.

Audi Crankshaft Pulley - Audi Crankshaft Pulley Technical Tip

The 8 smaller holes/bolts hold the crank pulley on. The center bolt holds the gear to crank shaft. You'll need to loosen the main crank bolt in order to get gear off. A challenge in itself...but there are tricks, such as tapping the starter with breaker bar locked down. I never tried it with the crank lock pin, so I don't know if that's another option. If you're getting this deep into the front of the engine, you might as well consider doing timing belt & possibly fixes other likely leaky spots such as cam seals & cam tensioner seals. Note that you'll need a cam lock bar for redoing the timing belt.

Did not know about key way on crank gear.
Yes am doing T.B. water pump ,thermostat , pulleys and tensioner. w/ cam lock bar w/ crank lock pin
I could not find any info on this doing search .
