custom sub enclosure interest
hey guys...
im building a custom sub box that will drop into the factory symphony location on the passagers side of the trunk without any modification.
it can house a 10 or 12" woofer, but its pretty much up to the customer.
will have the prototype and some pics ready in a couple of days.
i was only wondering if there would be any interest in it.
Please post if interested.
my car is a 99 A6 so pretty much will fit any C5.
great for those that want a lil fill but not to clutter the trunk up with stereo equipment.

well im doing a full out SQ system and really with whats already in the car ( 6.5" drivers ) dont really need more that a 12 and thats more than enough.
Also when it comes to SQ its about clean power so i will be using mostly memphis... ( got a smokin deal )
so i got a Memphis Belle 1300 to drive all four corners and the Sub chanell with lots to spare. the front and rears will be the Memphis M-Class 6.5 Component Set and for the sub will be a Memphis M310DVC. that will be plenty for me with lots of room to improve if i ever decide to.
Also for the headunit im using a Kenwood Excelon 817DVD single din in dash DVD.
Like i said the mid bass is covered thanks to the 6.5" component set with 75W RMS runing to them and then anoather 600W RMS running into the 10" sub wich will be plenty for my needs, but if i ever decide to go nutty i have the option of going to 2 12's or larger and drop down to 1ohm and drop 1100W Rms into those puppies

I can't see how that would ever sound good. I hope you gave enough airspace for that woofer. There isnt a lot of room especially if you want to put that enclosure behind the panel. Are you planning to port it into the trunk? Your best bet is to take that side panel out and make a new one with an enclosure in it.
using an enclosure wont really work in the corner spots in the trunk. not enough space. another issue is that an enclosure that would fit that spot wouldnt be worth the trouble of making. best way to go around that is to make a plate that goes in the front from mdf, and the back out of fiberglass. for that much room 8's would work, one per side, 10's maybe if the manufacturer states that they wont need as much air volume. as far as 12's, completely no go, its never going to sound right, too little room in there. if you want hidden speakers youll need to take out the spare and cut out that metal piece that sits in the boot, then weld that over with a metal plate, raise the floor like 2-3 inches to make a false one and put the speaker into the dip and amps underneath the false floor. also, not all 10s and 12's will fit into that spot in the trunk. for example, treo ssx, RE xxx and a W7, theyre waaaaaaaaaay too big in the back and the magnets are simply massive. also the basket itself is much bigger than the opening thats there behind the factory panel. to fit a woofer that cailber into that enclosure youll need to use 3/4 inch mdf front plate and struts that go into the englosure that you will have to alltach to the sides to hold a woofer like that. one is theyre around 50 pounds a piece and when they start moving around, its tough to hold em down, its like a jackhammer in there. trust me, i would know, ive had my W7 12 for years and believe me, if the front of the car shakes bad enough to tip over water bottles on the hood, the roof or the dash, then the rear and that panel is getting a beating three times as hard. irregular shaped boxes also cause rather weird sounding bass and standing waves. _Adrian_ you said u want a "full SQ system", but your list a bit short. youre going to need LOTS more things in your list to make it a "full SQ" system. ive been competing for a couple of years now, gotten trophies and believe me, i really wish it was as simple as youre making it sound. in my previous car, i spent 2 weeks on my doors and dash alone to get the sound stage to a 8 out of 10. its hours and hours of tweaking and tuning. as far as the memphis brand, theyre pretty good overall, but youll need to look at something higher end than that to place well and consistent. with the setup youre planning on doing youll end up with a weird soundstage. it wont feel well defined, itll feel like a blob, you definitely need to rethink where youre placing speakers. i can write a full explanation with some diagrams(courtesy of ms paint
)but i wont right now because people may not care to read a 4 page post. if you guys do want something like that, let me know. I am about to start working on the audio in my car to get it ready for the next season of competitions and I can post photos with explanations of the process in a setp by step fashion. I have to take photos anyways to make a folder(its a thing for competitions, ill explain if u guys ask) If you want to I can post one of my scoresheets from last summer and explain the way they score it, what they look for and how its done. for competing in SQ youll need some things. one is LOTS and LOTS of time and patiense if you plan to do the work yourself. two is money and more money, equipment is not cheap by far, trust me on this one and youre going to ahve to buy some expensive toys no way around that. three is a really good shop. you can go to a chain store thats like circuit city or a best buy or tweeter, but i find their installs and tuning lacking. they do a good enough job for an everyday joe, but theyre still not up to par to compete. you need a shop with somebody thats been competing for years and years. sad thing is, there are not that many. i am fortunate to have one in my area, the owner has been in magazines and the world finals and placed, lets just leave it at that. another thing is that you will need to start learning a lot about electronics in general and the specific ones you use. also, you will need to know things about crossovers, equalizers and all that good stuff. youll need to know how they work, what they do and how the ydo it, what happens when you change something, wiring, tuning, its just a mess basically. its not easy to just get a car and boom youre good enough. ive been into car audio for like 8 years and ive only placed 2nd so far, but at least im consistent. i dont claim to know everything, but im always learning new things and if not, i know where to ask and how to find it out. if you need help with audio, let me know, ill help you out or find out for you. ill wrap it up by saying good luck with what youre doing and that youll need to develop the part of the personality that makes you ****, because you have to have that to do SQ.

also the sub will be mounted to a .75" MDF board.
PS:
the depth of the box is 6.575" while the M3 10DVC is 5.6" deep and requires 0.73 Cu.ft. which i meet and exceed with .5 cu.ft. to spare.

also im not looking to win any competitions or to impress anyone. all i want is nice clean an crisp sound. if i ever decided that i want my brain rattled good i will buy a 12" MOJO and a matching 4KWMOJO amp, but thats insane and i will most likely never gonna happen.
the problem is ...
that im trying to go with someone localy that can help me out if im having some some issues with any product.
and MB Quart isnt one of them
as it is its was really hard to find someone that caries JL and for memphis i gotta trave about an hour to the closest authorized dealer.
as far as the internet goes i got burned a couple of times with that ...
so i kindah gave up on that idea.
