Default decisions, decisions...

all prices are before negotiations...

torn between a 2000 A6 2.7T with 44k on it for about $17k and a 2001 A6 4.2 with about 67k on it for $18k.

the 4.2 has every option available except a navigation system. i would rather go with the 4.2, but i don't know if the extra miles are going to be an issue. i will be purchasing an extended warranty (4 years) with either car that runs another $2k.

what does everyone think?

The lifespan of a turbo is highly dependent on proper oil maintenence and proper warm-up and cool-down.

since it's a used car, i unfortunately cannot vouch for the habits of the previous owner. hopefully they knew that, though.

edited for stupidity.

I'd go with the 4.2 since that engine is bulletproof and Ibelieve there was something with the 2000 model 2.7 where the turbos failed more? I'm not positive, do some searches on a 2000.

Ihad a 2.7t for 114,000 miles and liked it very much. I now have a 4.2 and like it even more. The 4.2 gives me about 1.5-2 MPG better every tank full. 4.2 runs so silky smooth. The 2.7t was not as smooth and had a bit of lag. Always acted lean as though it was surging when warming up to opperating temp. Cool downs are a MUST if you don't want to coke, (bake) the oil in the turbo. The 4.2 has more power at the hit and highup the RPM band, the turbo has a wider powerband below peak revs under boost. I prefer the 4.2 over the turbo.

i think i'm going to go with the 4.2. it's just....more pimp.

is there any way to tell if the premium, warm weather, cold weather, etc packages were purchased if the dealer isn't sure? i mean what sort of options do these packages give you?

Premium = electrically adjustable steering wheel
Cold = heated seats

I think almost all 4.2s came with Premium package. About the only options those had were nav, CD changer in trunk and sun shade.

Sounds like a good deal. Good luck!

No matter which one you buy, try and get the service/maintenance reports to make sure it was properly taken care of. And do your own inspection of EVERY feature on the vehicle. Test them all and negotiate accordingly if some don't work. That means all the electronic cool stuff, the windows, A/C.etc. If you can afford it, bring it to a reputable indie shop that knows Audis and have them do a full inspection. Even if they find one thing, you'll probably save the cost of the inspection when you negotiate down the price to cover the repair.
