EGR valve

EGR valve
Had my first CEL, pulled and cleared codes and it is a sticking EGR valve.
Has anyone had any experience with this. It is $350 for a new valve.
The CEL has not come back on yet.
Can anything be done to clean the current valve.
I have a 96 A6 Q wagon with the 2.8
Thanks.

RE: EGR valve
thanks avant80. u seem to have all the answers.
Is it difficult to remove and clean? Will i need a new gasket?
What do i use to clean it?
Where on the engine is this valve located?
Thanks.

just 2 bolts and you should get away with the same gasket, just scrap any carbon out that is stuck to the piston once you have the valve off the car you will see what I mean

RE: EGR valve
The man with the answers.
Do u use any kind of cleaner to remove the carbon?
Then just spray it up with wd40?
Can any damage be done to the egr by doing this? will removal trigger any codes?
Can anything be done to the solenoid, should i replace any of the vaccum lines?
Or do anything else?
Thanks.

RE: EGR valve
only remove the valve when the engine is very cold ( do not turn the ignition on for any reason till job completed and re-fitted) this will trigger a fault code ( remove the battery negative terminal if you worried ), a thin flat blade screwdriver is suffice to clean it out the a little spray with lube oil

RE: EGR valve
more than likely the carbon buildup is in the intake itself. best way is to actually take the intake off and break it down into its two pieces and clean it from the inside out. but its always worth a try to see if you can dislodge some of the crud from the outside. id get a good scraping tool, pick and go at it on the intake as well.
