Default electrical fault

help please !!!!

Problem has somthing to do with keys and locks on my 2001 A6. When I unlock the car with buttons. On the second press the windows start to lower slowly and you can hear the locking mechanism clicking in the doors. (thisclicking just keeps going until I lock the car again).

This is intermitting and somtimes the car is fine then at other times the locking mechanism starts as I'm driving as well as the interior lights switching on and off.

Any ideas please before I take it to the dealer !!!!!

I've had a similar problem with my A6 and its got progressively worse over the last 14 months. Four different Audi dealerships/specialist garages have all failed to resolve the problem and none of them want to revisit it. On some A6 models there is a design fault in that drain holes are either easily blocked or non existent. this results in damp getting at the electrical components. Due to the thickness of the insulation, I didn't realise that my car was damp until I started ripping up carpets and removing the rear seat. TRY ENSURING THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE DAMP TOUCHING THE ELECTRICS under the back seat and in the front footwells. If you find damp you've probably found your problem. Dry it thoroughly and then spray wiring and affected electrical components with silicone. Good luck. PS. The large type is only because I pressed the caps lock by mistake but rather than change it I thought maybe it was meant to be.

Thanks very much for the advice.

Hopefully that is the problem as it has not happened for a two days (weather has been fine and dry!)

At work now, but will have a look at my car when I get home. I'm sure there is a hole where a stud for the back detatchable carpet is meant to be. I will silicone this from outside and in and will post to let you know if you have saved me a lot of money and stress,

Thanks again

Looks like its definatly the damp conditions! As soon as it started raining heavy doors started locking and unlocking when driving. I can see wires through the hole in the carpet and they actually looked like there was moisture on them. Whats the best way to get rid of the damp in this situation.
Thanks

Had flood in my 2000 A6 passenger footwell - had to remove passenger seat, remove trim from pillars etc and lift carpet. Water everywhere! The foam is so thick under the carpet it tends to disguise it - and the last thing you want is rotting carpet! Once I had passenger side carpet up I had mobile car groom guy use the wet vac to get out most of water out then left outside (summer) each day (2)with doors open and carpets pulled back-dried out real well. ps. obviously you need to track the source of water - mine was from blocked drainsfrom under dash (as mentioned as design fault earlier). Good Luck!

The drains at the front!

What sort of size are these holes and will i be able to see them once I take the battery out?

I'm not much of a mechanic but have solved a couple of problems on my A4 when I had it, by using this forum.

Do I need special tools etc to take carpets up etc..

Thanks n advance

Dealership found problem when I had car in for an aircon fault - was pumping hot air out of some vents and cold out of others - they unblocked drain in plenim at same time and fixed a misaligned grommet? You wont need special tools for taking carpet out - just go slow and easy on the trim clips so they dont break and be extremely careful if you have airbags in your seat! Only 2 bolts at front and seat will roll out backwards off runners - remember to put some newspaper down so not to mark carpet. With trim off carpet can be folded back. I am in dealership again today (oil leak) lucky I have warranty-so will find out more about the drains unless someone else can help us out?????

Cheers mate,

What I have seen, is that the plastic strip that goes across the front window under the wipers was not fitted back on correctly (after change of battery). It was a little loose and there are very slight damp patches around and below the battery. If this was the problem would the electrics be getting the damp from here?

Came out of the house today and all my windows were down about a inch so I unlocked the car lifted the windows but was unable to lock the car again[:@].Had to leave it unlocked and come to work!

Again it was a damp night

My water came from aircon the drain pipe was blocked - build up of scum on inside tube but dealership also said the plenum drain was blocked too. You should really check to see if you have water under your carpet especially since the computer is under the passanger footwell.

Never rained since i refitted the plastic cover that joins to front window (window wipers) and never incurred any problems at all. Waiting for the rain now!

It can be the only reason, its got to be the reason........
