Default Engine Problems Help

I just bought a 2003 Audi A6 quattro 3.0l. The car sounds like it has a trucks diesel engine and goes to 70mph without much problems but has no pull after that on a flat road or at lower speeds on a hill. The car is loud. I am told it is the engine which has sludge around the oil cap and my mechanic told me I should have it replaced.

What I am wondering is whether anyone knows if I would be able to swap a different A6 engine in such as a 4.2l or 2.7t. I was told the 3.0l is the worst engine and that a 4.2 could be integrated with just purchasing a new transmission but that the 2.7t would require new electrical but that both line up. Any ideas. Also I found I can get the 4.2l or 2.7l for over more than $500 less than a 3.0l which there are few of. I appreciate any help as I am new to Audi's and searched this forum and registered to ask my question. Thanks

Just sell the car and buy a 4.2 or 2.7T. It will be cheaper.
