Default Fading Dash Display

Anyone suffered the centre dash display, which shows the fuel computer & radio station, fading ???

It's worse in the summer when it's hot.

I've explored the technical options for this fault and come up with "the car is worth 3 grand, so live with it....!"

The only fix is for you to replace the instrument cluster. There is no repairing the center display. Someone wrote up a quick article with pics on how to swap clusters here:

Yeah, I have the same issue on my '01 2.8Q. Tried getting it covered under an extended warranty, but no dice. The Acura dealer (long story) I took it to said the part is $695 + 1.5 hours give or take of labor...that's about when my buttcheeks puckered up...

You can do it for far less if you do it yourself, pay the core charge, and turn in the old cluster. I think Sean (who wrote the tech article I linked previously) ended up paying $400 out of pocket and an hour or so of his time (and his buddy with the VAG COM).

Yeah, but doesn't that VAG Com software run about 2 bills or so? Then you're looking at almost a wash as compared to a dealer doing it.

You could always find someone local with the VAG COM cable to help you, or you can buy one, but after you are done with the instrument cluster swap, you now have a valuable tool in your possession for future use.

I wrote that article that BD is pointing out in his post. Changing the cluster isn't all that difficult except for the removal of the two phillips head screws which felt like they had loctite on them. Also, it's a bit unnerving to set the mileage because it's not intuitive and it's a one shot deal; screw it up and you've just lost $400.

That being said, I'm glad that I did this myself with help from a friendly VAG-COM owner. It took something like an hour and a half and that's because of those ridiculous phillips head screws.
