First Post, need advice..
I am planning on purchasing a 2004 A6 in the next few weeks. I had my mind set on the 2.7t S-line because of the better horsepower over the standard 2.7t. I am coming from a 2003 Mustang Cobra 525/550, and even though you can’t compare the two cars, I would like to have a little power to play with. I have been reading up on owner opinions on performance on the board, and it seems that the A6 4.2 has a little more to offer. Has anybody driven or owned both, or could recommend either over the other? I am going back to school and need an AWD car that will be good for a long commute. I am officially out of the “mod game” so it will stay stock. Thanks for any help.
If it will stay stock, go 4.2. Its a great highway car, lots of power from the V8, great reliability.
The 2.7T is a mod motor, it's built to be played with. Still a good highway cruiser, but much better with twisties, and honestly slightly less reliable.
If you want a 6 speed manual, your choice has already been made, only the 2.7T is available in a Manual Trans.

If you absolutely don't think you will ever mod the car then I would recommend the 4.2. Out of the box the 4.2 has a V8 and more power then the 2.7T. better styling and a more aggressive stance. smooth power and a great car to drive.
But the 2.7T is not a bad choice and with a chip you are way over the power and performance of the 4.2.
I would think about the 2.7T if you are not 100% sure the mod bug is gone.
Not to bust your bubble (my brother has a terminator mustang great car) butthe GT turbo 2.7T's make 515whp on pump gas 605whp on race gas. all this threw the AWD system complete with Bose surround sound, heatedleather seats, 4 doors, 8 air bags, and the ability to make 500+whp and still be able to talk to the person next to you.
If you like the mustang sound you migh enjoy my car check the Vid link below I am a V8 car.....and to further make you feel at home my car isGETTING (not on the car in thevid)the Vast performance supercharger for the 4.2 wich is a 2.2l kenny bell blowzilla autoroter supercharger

Thanks for the advice. I hope you didn’t think that I was questioning the athletic ability of the Audi. They are great cars. I guess I should have said that a Ford was made for one thing and the Audi was made for another. All it takes is a fat wallet to make any car fast. Now to find a 4.2.
i specifically didnt go with the S Line on my car, because I planned to chip it, so it makes no diff after a chip. the diff between the S and regular is the programming is a bit more agressive, but a chip will equalize the diff between the two, so i didnt wana spend the extra 5K on just stickers
If you're commited to not modifying, then the 4.2l is the way to go. It makes over 300 hp stock with excellent torque, has a wider stance and fender flares, and you don't have to worry about turbos failing.Owners claim it gets better mileage than the 2.7T at highway speeds and turns lower rpms doing it.All the normal Audi maintenance applies.
Either one make great sports luxury touring cars. I wanted the 6-speed, so the 2.7T was the way to go for me. Caution - even with a chip, it is not a terribly fast car off the line due to AWD and weight. It's no slouch, but there are a lot faster RWD cars. Now...when it snows....no comparison.

Thanks for the help. I will be driving up I-81 through out the winter and I want a luxury car that has AWD. I will also get a certified car, so I wouldn't monkey around with a chip. A question for those who replied. With the price and in service dates being a push, A6 2.7t S-line with 36k, or the A6 4.2 with 45k.Would the4.2 with extra 10kinfluence your decision? The reason that I ask is that I am not very knowledgeable withhigher mileage Audis.
