Default flaky temp guage

my audi a6 2001 temp gauge is acting weird.. sometime its comes to the half 1/2 way mark and then drops back to zero .... at times its moves to 1/2 way and at times it never moves even if I drive for 60 miles... oil gauge temp is around 200 consistently...

Roughly $20 on parts and 15 minute labor... You can do it yourself.

The sensor is located behind the passenger side head and can be accessed by removing the intake tubing. Be sure to get the plastic clip as well.

Default flaky temp gauge

I was having the same sort of problem with my A4. It sounded like it was running real heavy on the first day it dropped into the 30's. Then my CEL came on. I brought it in today and they said they needed to replace the coolant sensor. They are charging me $288 for it. Is this reasonable? I know the part is only $32, however, I brought it to a local mechanic and not the dealership. Do they need to drain the whole line to replace the sensor as well?

Any comments are welcomed

The indy shop charged me $130.00 for this job, $80 for 1 hr labor, $50 for ECT sensor and coolant to top off.

Default Help!

My coolant sensor was replaced on Monday, and the CEL was no longer on my dashboard. I drove it to work yesterday, approximately 50 miles round trip. I got in my car this morning to drive to work and the CEL was back on!!!

Any idea what my concerns should be?

The code that came up when they ran the diagnostic on Monday was P0118.

I'm bringing it back in tomorrow. I will let you know what I find out. I'm hesitant to have any work done until I get further advice.
