Default Flat Tire - Do I have to replace all 4 tires?

I got a flat tire (REAR Drivers side) the other day, so i jacked up the car (2002 Audi A6 Quattro) and put on the spare, which is a brand spanking new ContiTouringContact 215/55/16.

So - My question is can I simply replace the other rear tire, or do I need to replace all 4 - as the guy who answered the phone at the tire store claimed. He said that all tires must be within 2/32 of treadware.

If thats the case, it seems like my best move would be to purchase a used tire, as my tires are about 50%. Any suggestions for that in the Bay Area, preferably San Francisco?

he is right. all tires must be within 2/32 (acording to audi)
i drove round for a couple of weeks with my spare on (brand new) and 3 bald tires (1/32) and nothing happened. but i wouldnt risk it if i were you (since its gonna be permanent) so i guess look for a used tire! or another alternative...

Buy 4 new tires. The extra tread could save your life.

You can replace just the one tire, as long as its the same size nothing will happen the quattro system.

Hi auditech79 your right again -- I mean as usual LOL!!

I would consider getting another new tire that matches your spare and put the two new ones on the front. Then take the worst tire of the three you have left and put it in the trunk as a spare.

So there is some dissention in the troops...

Can I put two NEW tires on the back of the audi, and still keep the worn tires on the front?

Yes you can put the two new tires on either end, but I would put them on the front because that is where most of the work is done -- ie. braking, steering, etc
