Default Foam pieces shooting out the defrost vents

Hi, i have an 2001 A6Q 4.2 118k, and lately, due to winter, the defrost has been coming on alot stronger. And along with the hot air, little pieces of foam are shooting out with it. Not a ton, but enough that it is leaving tiny little foam pieces all over the dashboard[&:] I inspected one of the larger pieces to come out of there, and it feels quite rotted, not surprisingly.

Has anyone heard of this before? I am perplexed...

-Thanks in advance!

-JJ

Yup. I do think since I live in OK, that the sun might have something to do with it here.

I don't have this particular problem, but I did start a thread a while back about the foam lining in the engine bay of my A6. The car was a dealer demo with 11K miles, and this foam lining was flaking apart all over the engine bay. Dealer tried to fix it without any luck, so I'm just hoping it doesn't get any worse.

I'm guessing Audi, reputation for build quality notwithstanding, figures it can get by using cheap materials in places where no one can really see it. Anyone ever open the front door on their car and taken a look in towards the fenderwell (in the area just beyond the door hinges)- it's filled with styrofoam! Painted in body color, but stryofoam nonetheless. WTF???

If I remember correctly, the foam in there isn't just being cheap, it's for some dent protection and (more importantly) sound deadning. A lot of manufacturers do this, as it's a quick and light way to stop road noise from getting in the cabin.

I have the same dark grey little bits of foam from the vents. I did some poking about on a wrecked a6 and found out that there is a sticky foam that goes around the vent baffles. (these are the "doors" that internally direct heat to floor etc). Anyways this glued on foam is there to make sure that the baffles seal and do it quietly. At any rate they get dry with age and flake off. There is only one way to fix it... remove the dash and replace them. I think its liveable....
