Gas pressurizes tank
Hey all, I am having problem with a 99 1/2 A6 2.8 Quattro. Basically when I go to fill it up at the station the fuel going in pressurizes the tank. It’s like the air has nowhere to go. I did some research and found that this in sorts was a recall. All Audi did was slap a sticker on the inside of the fuel door that talks about pushing in the nozzle all the way. So basically if I want air to escape the tank right now i half to put ALOT of force on the nozzle, than you can start to hear air pass by. I have tried looking into this with stealerships and on the net and haven’t found much luck. Any support would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks
I'm not clear on how you know the tank is pressurized. The nozzle is not a sealed fit in the opening, the air should get by it. What do you mean by putting force on the nozzle? Do you mean the little door on the tank opening won't open?
Ok, I think I understand your questions. And I understand that this seams weird, cuz it is. So I will just try to re-explain it; open the fuel door, unscrew the gas tank cap, place the nozzle/handle in the throat of the tank. Start filling up the tank, fuel enters faster than the air can escape, because it is becoming pressurized the fuel is being pushed past the nozzle and out towards me (like a spray), if I stop filling and pull out the nozzle without letting it sit for a minute (to depressurize) the fuel will literally shoot out like 3 or 4 cups of gas like a foot or two. So what I do is push hard on the nozzle and then I can hear the air releasing.
Hope that clarifies.
Hope that clarifies.

I am not familiar with this particular system, but most have a tank vent valve and yours may be sticking or stuck shut. It opens when the engine is not running to channel fumes to the cannister.
I would check to see if maybe there is a kink in your vent line that runs from the tank up to the back side of your filler neck. if you remove the inner wheel liner you can get to all the lines pretty easily. the fuel is supposed to go down the big line and the air is fed back up a smaller line that ties back into the filler neck just behind the fender. There is alot more to this system than just these two hoses as the evaporative system is tied in with it also but its a place to start. you will see just how complicated it is when you pull the wheel liner as there are a whole pile of hoses hidden behind there.
