Help! Coolant Temp and Oil Temp, Gauges Low!!!
Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. I just recently(last Saturday) purchased a 98' A6, with a 2.8L engine.
Well tuesday night I got in my car to drive somewhere and after around 7-8 miles(open roads) the coolant temperature gauge barely moved. At the same time my check engine light came on...Ghaa!
Well today I stopped at Autozone and had them read my check engine light. I got three codes, the first was a gas cap error. The second was P1138 and the third was P1136. This is what both error slips said:
P1136,

Long Term Fuel Trim Add. Fuel B1 System Too Lean
Explanation
Failed MAF
Probable Causes
1.-Low fuel pressure
2.-Vacuum leak on engine
3.-Failed Ho2S
P1138,

Long Term Fuel Trim Add. Fuel B2 System Too Lean
Explanation
Failed MAF
Probable Causes
1.-Low fuel pressure
2.-Vacuum leak on engine
3.-Failed Ho2S
The only difference in these two notices is the Fuel system number. One is B1 and the other is B2.
Now I am thinking it is a vacuum leak as I've heard these engines are prone to that.
Also today on an about 20 minute drive the engine coolant gauge went up about 3/4 after 8-10 miles.
Is there any correlation between the two problems, or is it a complete coincidence that both of these problems popped up at the exact same time?
So I guess what I'm asking is if there are any common problems that may be identified by these symptoms.
I'd appreciate any help that you could give me.
Thanks again, Daniel

that coolant temp does seem a little bit low.....How cold is it where you are? You could also change the coolant temp sensor(very common problems and easy and cheap to DIY). As far as the lean codes i would agree with the vacuum leak. Keep driving it for a couple days though, sometimes, in the event that the 02 sensor is bad, it will take the o2 sensor longer to set a code. Have your codes re-checked in a couple of days and if it is still the same, I would say look for vacuum leaks.
Thanks, ill wait a couple more days. We have had highs in the single digits for the past few days. By this weekend it is supposed to be in the 40s.
I took the beauty cover off and it looks like some of the vacuum hoses had been gnawed on by mice... do you think that the coolant and fuel problems could possibly be connected?
Well, hopefully the higher temps will help! I love this car so far! The Quattro is great!
Thanks again!

B1 and B2 stand for bank 1 and bank 2. Bank 1 is your passenger side cylinders and bank 2 is your driver side cylinders. With that said, the first suspect is the vacuum leak. Check the hoses at the top of the engine. If in doubt, just replace the whole thing. It should not cost more than $5 for parts at a local parts shop. My 2001 had a vacuum diagram on the underside of the hood. Your might have it too.
As for the temps, why don't you plan a long drive? If you go for a spirited drive for more than 30 minutes, it should heat up to proper temperature.
BTW, I don't think the 2 issues are related.

Here in MN, it takes about 25 mins of hwy driving for my old temp to reach 175-190. My temp gauge reaches normal (50%...1/2...?) after 10 mins, 5 of that on the hwy. Always been this way when it is cold out.
Well this is what I got after about a 35min drive: the oil coolant level is at around 1/8(200deg) and the motor coolant level is at around 1/4(see pic). What should the oil temp be at?
I think that the vacuum lines are prob suspect due to their being very brittle and as i said before they look like they had been chewed on a little in the past by mice.
You said all the hoses could be replaced for around $5? That sounds great!...how long of a job would that be?
Thanks!

Haha... yeah. I was driving to school which is around 30 miles away from my house and I checked the thread before I got out of the car...noticed he said that, snapped a pic w/the phone and made the post...
aaany way. The temp situation seems to be solved, but to be sure what is the normal Oil and Coolant temps?
