Default Help... Huge Repair Bills

Help...

I dropped my car off this week to get a few problems fixed. I've already replaced the water pump, t-stat (not done when the previous owner did the TB... I know I know). Front and rear pads. A gearbox gasket and seal.

Well,2 days later[:@] and the list has grown and now I need:

Anew radiator
New steering rack
New tie rod ends

Does anyone know if the steering rack is different between the A6 4.2 and S6? Here is one I found that didn't seem to bad price wise, but no idea if it is what I need

or here:

Thanks guys

Rack itself should be the same. Earlier serial numbers had different tie rod ends I think.

Great, that is a bit of a relief. Online I can get them for around a third of the price of a dealer's remanufactured one.

Is there any difference between the steering racks on a wide body A6 and the narrow bodied ones?

Why do you need a new steering rack. I was told that I had a bad rack...turned out to be a bad mechanic .... Problem was fixed with a tie rod.

My steering rack is leaking. I got it checked by at least 2 independent mechanics. The steering is also getting heavy turning left compared to turning right.

I've also got an additional CV boot that needs to be replaced.

Actually, these have been pending issues for a long time. Since I got the car a year ago, things have been slowly leaking. I made sure I was on top of things, such as with the coolant and steering fluid.

I finally got round to replacing the water pump, and had the radiator repaired for now. As it was a small leak x 3, it didn't cause any 'serious' problems. If the level of coolant still goes down, then I will have to replace the radiator.

The steering rack was mis-diagnosed originally as the Power Steering pump. That will have to be replaced.

Try the following website.

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=215021

It is helpful when you are comparing parts. Based on the information, A6 and S6 rack is the same.

Kat,

What kind of prices are you getting for a rad? Mine sprung a BAD leak a couple weeks ago, called my mechanic, told him I had a prob, told me he would call for a rad the next AM. Drove up, he told me he called, wouldn't order, price was 750, I'm tight.

Called my local foreign car wrecker/repair/parts place, told him I wanted a rad, he started with used, said no, new, he got me a new one for 118 bucks, delivered the next afternoon, installed the next day.

I don't do my own work anymore. Seems to me the rad was lighter than the ones I have changed in older models I have changed out myself, but that could be because they still had coolant in them, or my own memory is failing.

I don't know where you are, I don't know if they would take a long distance order, but if you want to try them, I know my e-mail is posted, I could direct you to them.

Cheers,

George
