Default help, looking at 02 a6 2.7t

Hello all. I'm new to this forum and don't even have an Audi...yet. My question is this. I have been all over this forum, but would like to come right out and ask some questions that I know have probably already been asked here somewhere.

The car I am looking at is an 02 2.7t with 68,000 miles. It is certified and comes with a 4 year unlimited mileage warranty. This is my first Audi and I am a little nervous of the miles, especially having turbos involved. The car also has the sport package and drives like a dream. I put 50 miles a day on to work and back and driving this car will be a great way to spend those miles. They are asking $17,900 for the car. What should I look at or make sure has already been serviced before buying this vehicle? The car is rediculously clean inside and out and the mileage leads me to believe that the car was a highway driven car. Anyone willing to share their two cents would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!

Hey,

I would check to see if the timing belt (belt, tensioner, water pump, etc.) have been replaced. Most likely they have not with 68K only. This will cost you between $800 and $1500 when you do get it done. The manual says around 100K miles but you may want to do it sooner depending upon what your warranty says. I would get the manual out of the car and write down what will need to be repaired or checked soon. 75K is a standard time for an extensive vehicle checkup/maintenence. Check the manual.

Also be sure that the brakes are good, they are more expensive than you may expect, $500+ installed all around. Before you buy, I would have the dealer run a comp. diagnostic to make sure that there are no major issues. The price sounds reasonable to me. Keep in mind, these are great cars but they are costly to repair. I would find a local mechanic, not dealership, that may be able to save you money down the road.

Good luck, it sounds like a sweet ride.

A few things to look for can be found in this link: Things to look for with a 2.7T.

The big ticket items to be aware of are turbos (not to worry if the previous owner took good care of them by changing the oil regularly), control arms (listen for that clunk when going over bumps -- see the link for details), timing belt (has it been replaced? -- were the wather pump and all the pulleys/tensioners replaced at the same time?), and auto tranny. I'd definitely have a good, independent mechanic check it out before buying. Check the appropriate regional forum to find a good one (search first, post a query to find one if searaching turns up nothing recent).

Biggest tip: make sure you've shopped around before jumping. There are a TON of these cars out there just coming off lease and plenty of them have lower mileage.

Good luck!

Hi,

I was in a similar situation in late 2004. I bought a used 2001 A6 2.7T on e-bay. It had about 68,000 miles on it also. The car was in Lexington, KY. Actually purchased it on e-bay then went down to retrieve it. Luckily I had an Audi guru accompany me. It was also very clean. Had been used in Cincinnati, OH so it had exposure to salt etc but was in very good condition.

If you're able - take someone with you or even ask if you can take it to your local mechanic or someone that knows about Audi's. Check out some messages on here about new purchases on what to look for. Check belts, brakes, arms, make sure there's a manual and at least 2 keys. They do drive like a dream but are pricey to repair. See that the tires have some good wear on them yet - at least you won't need to replace them right away.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. The car has new brakes and tires. As for the belt and waterpump, I am not sure. I am going back to take another look at the car tomorrow. I hope to get the history of the car and take a longer drive then.

I've looked at a few others, and of them, this is the cleanest one I've come across. The miles are a little steep, but if it was well mainained, like I'm thinking it was, I'm not too worried.

What does anyone think about the four year, unlimited miles, bumper to bumper warranty. The dealership told me it covers everything from the turbos, tranny, etc. clear down to the keyless entry.
