Default Help needed on Crankshaft position sensor/rpm sensor?

I have a 1997 A6 Quattro Station wagon. I love this car but unfortunately the head gasket started to leak from two month ago. My mechanic suggested me to just replace the whole engine.

I found and bought an old engine with $550. It is from a 97 A4 Quattro Sedan. Then my mechanic put it into my wagon. Everything looks corrct excpet that the crankshaft position sensor does not fit. The picture below shows the sensor from my wagon. The mechanic said it is too long and it will hit the wheel.

I assume the engines are the same though the second one is from a sedan.
But the mechanic insist that there must be a short sensor but he could not find it even after talking with the local audi dealer.

But why the sensor is too long?

Anyone has any clue on this issue? Thanks for your information.

Default what sensor it is?

I attach two pics there to show the location of the sensor. Could anyone help me to identify what sensor it is? I appreciate your help!

Did the mechanic try it and confirm that it hits? This sensor has been used in all of the 2.8 V6 engines for many years.

The clearance between the end of the sensor and the crankshaft counterweight is only about 1mm. I would have one person hold it in by hand and another turn the crankshaft slowly. The person holding in the sensor will feel if it hits.
