We just got an '02 A6 3.0 Quattro last night. Quite pleased with it. Our other car is a 2010 Toyota Venza. After trying to do Homelink's insane procedure they prescribe for the Audi (holding your original garage door remote in front of the right headlight, trying to get the hazard lights to flash) for ten minutes, I gave up that procedure and just did exactly what our Venza manual said. It's the same as the one mustang196718 describes. Worked perfectly.

So, Joe, ignore the "area behind the bumper". He's talking about the control panel inside the car.

And G3ML1NGZ, using the learn button to initiate a new car does not affect any previous ones.

G3ml1ngz, you're welcome!

Theiceman, homelink is the company that makes the remotes which are built into the visors. The only company, as far as I know.

Just tired the alternate procedure with no luck. I get to the step where I'm holding both the remote and Homelink buttons waiting for the system to "time out", but it never does. Homelink light just keeps flashing and flashing and flashing for minutes and minutes and minutes and I finally give up. Tried it with two different remotes (same system) and still no luck.

BTW, while the car was at the dealer a couple of weeks ago I asked them to program it (with my remote). They said they did, but of course couldn't check it. I did when I got home. Nothing.

Aaaarrrrrrggghhh!

Joe

i'm also having similar problems. i think that the 'learning' button on the garage door unit needs to be flashing when you try to program it. i'm going to try it again today. bleh...

Mine's an older system without a rolling code so it should be simple to program, and it was with my X5, but not so for the A6.

i finally got it yesterday. it really wasnt that tough and i think the directions made it more difficult than it should have been.
1. hold the two outer buttons to reset (flashy flashy)
2. hold the button you want to set (flash flash flash)
3. go to the front of the car & hold the remote pointed at yo' headlights until the hazards flash
4. press the 'learn' button on the garage door opener in the garage
5. haul your butt back to the car & hold the button you programmed for a few seconds.
done

Yep that's the owners manual procedure, but neither it nor the one posted by Mustang work for me. Tried both many times. Like I said, I don't think it's the particular garage opener system I have, because it programmed to the Homelink in my 2002 X5 with no issues at all. Must be something wrong with the Homelink system in my car.

Try this:

NOTE: Some vehicles may require the ignition to be turned on or to the second (or “accessory” or ACC) position for training and/or operation of HomeLink®. It is also recommended that a new battery be replaced in the hand held transmitter of the device being trained to HomeLink® for quicker training and accurate transmission of the radio frequency.

Programming HomeLink

1. For first time training, press and hold the two outer HomeLink® buttons, releasing only when the HomeLink® indicator light begins to flash after 20 seconds. (Do not perform this step when training the additional HomeLink® buttons.)
2. Press the appropriate HomeLink® button I, II or III which you want to train and keep holding it until the indicator light starts flashing slowly. Once the indicator light starts flashing slowly, you may release the button. HomeLink® is now in "training mode."

You will now have 5 minutes to train your hand held transmitter to the HomeLink® transmitter in the bumper.
3. A6 Sedan / AvantStand in front of your vehicle with the original hand held transmitter for the gate or garage door opener (or other device) that you wish to train.

The transmitter unit to be trained is located beneath the right headlight.
4. Hold the original hand held transmitter between 3-5 inches from the location described above, pointing at your car. NOTE: The distance between the hand held transmitter and the HomeLink® transmitter unit in the bumper depends on the system being trained. It may require several attempts at different distances in order to pick up the signal.
5. Now press and hold the button on your original hand held transmitter while keeping your hazard warning lights in view. The hazard warning lights will blink three times to indicate that the training has been successful.

Note: If the training time exceeds the five minutes, the hazard warning lights blink once. If this happens, you should repeat steps 2 to 5.
6. Press and hold the trained HomeLink® button and observe the indicator light.
* If the indicator light is solid/continuous, training is complete and your device should activate when the HomeLink® button is pressed and released.
* If the indicator light blinks rapidly for 2 seconds and then turns a solid/continuous light, proceed with the following training instructions for a rolling code device. A second person may make the following steps quicker & easier.
7. At the garage door opener receiver (motorhead unit) in the garage, locate the “learn” or “smart” button (usually near where the hanging antenna wire is attached to the unit). If there is difficulty locating the training button, reference the garage door opener’s manual, or contact us.
8. Press and release the “learn” or “smart” button (the name and color of the button may vary by manufacturer). NOTE: Once the button is pressed, there are 30 seconds in which to initiate the next step.
9. Return to the vehicle and firmly press and hold the trained HomeLink® button for two seconds and release. Repeat the “press/hold/release” sequence up to 3 times to complete the training process.

HomeLink® should now activate your device.

Retain the original hand-held transmitter of the RF device you are programming for use in other vehicles, as well as for future HomeLink® programming. It is also suggested that upon the sale of the vehicle, the programmed HomeLink® buttons be erased for security purposes. To erase the programmed buttons, perform the procedure shown in step number 1.

**To train additional HomeLink® buttons, begin with step two.

This procedure worked for my car.

Now if someone could tell me how to purge the original owner's phone numbers from my car's computer...
