hesitation during idle

hesitation during idle
I have a 98 2.8L Quattro with 81k miles. Lately, I've noticed that while stopped and idling there seems to be a bit of hesitation. the RPM's will go from the normal 800 - 1000 RPM down to about 300 - 500 RPM. As one point it felt like car was going to stall. Any ideas on what this could be? Do I need to replace the fuel filter or maybe the spark plugs???
Thanks.

RE: hesitation during idle
I've had something similar happening on an A3 and an A8, both of which were autos. Assuming you have an auto, check your brake light switch, which sits next to the top of the brake pedal. If this is faulty, the engine management system doesn't know you're braking and this can produce the symptom you describe. Brake light switches are between £6 and £12.
Hope this helps.

I cured the same problem on my 1998 2.4 by a bit of Italian maintenance - multi revo up the motorway for a few miles to clear the tubes and get it breathing again properly. It's worth a try, and a lot of fun.
