How can I get 3" lower on my 2001 A6 2.8 FWD
Cutting your springs is a terrible idea. It's unsafe and ride quality will be terrible. Also, it's nearly impossible to nail your desired height. The option you are looking for is lowering springs or coilovers. It can get pricey but you get what you pay for with suspension.
In case you are unfamiiar there are many reputable brands such as Eibach that produce lowering springs set for a certain height and ride quality for nearly every vehicle on the road. There are plenty of other brands out there but I'd suggest you look into this option as it will work with your stock strut though upgrading those while you do that is worth while and you can likely recoup some costs by selling your stock suspension.
Coilovers are adjustable suspension. You can literally set the car at whatever height you wish. There are also many reputable brands out there, I've always had great luck with TEIN and again you get what you pay for with Coils.
Some of the wheel gap you are seeing, if you swapped from stock wheels to 19's is poor alignment. Not saying it will be dramatic but I doubt you are looking for a full 3" drop with 19's. I could be wrong but that would be a very high stock ride height. 2-2.5" and an alignment should bring you close to a functional stance that's appealing to the eye as well. The alignment will also prevent camber wear, or uneven wearing of the tires which cuts the life of the tire to half at best.

thanks for all the info and yes I am aware of all of that. I put the 19's on and like i said before, 3" drop will bring my fender just barely past the top of the tire.
i have checked out all of the lowering springs and coil over kits and they seem to all only offer a maximum of 2.5"
Will coil overs go lower ??
Also anyone have issues with their trailing arms ? I had mine aligned after I rebuilt the entire front end (upper, lower control arms/tie rods/inner and outer cv's and shafts) and everything aligned great except when he went to adjust the drivers side rear he max'd out the adjustment on the trailing arm and said it was still a 1/4" to a 1/2" off. Right side was able to adjust fine. He assumed that there was something wrong with my trailing arm but audi dealer spoke with techs in shop and they said it was due to the 19's. but that doesn't add up to me because the passenger side rear trailing adjustment was tip top.
Any ideas ??
