You can try to run the exhuast under the bumper like what the previous owner did on my car.
But I would recomend atleast making cut outs for them to avoid rattling like in my case, since I have removed them. The best way would to simply get a new bumer from the newer a6 C5s.

Are you looking to keep the stock exhaust sytem and just add the tips? If so, I heard good things from this kit in general. Go for it! Looks like a pretty simple DIY. I believe I also saw a step-by-step DIY for this mod on here or AudiWorld.

look for a DIY on cutting the Valence and adding tips. Looks so nasty if done right! However, i couldnt bring myself to take a saw to my 40k car just cant trust myself hahahaha

The previous owner just took it to a shop and the shop put in an extending exhuast pipe that was made to fint and secured it onto the existing exhuast with a C clamp and welded the exhuast tips you see sticking out onto the pipe.
When I would start the car the pipes would move up and down and hit the bumper and esp. when I hit bumps it would rattle, very annoying. I suggest if you are planing to keep the stock bumper cut into the valance so the exhuast has room to travel, and when you just stick it under like how my car used to be, it really looks ugly/out of place.
