Default If you had $17,000?

What year and engine A6 would you buy?

I am not going to race, I am not going to do any mods (ok, maybe exhaust, ac, chip if it makes sense depending on engine), and it's usually just me in the car 70% highway.

I have been looking through the forum and searching various things, but am struggling here.

I am looking at a 2001 4.2 with 80k miles ($10k) and a 2004 2.7T S-line with 65K miles ($17k).

I started-out convinced I was going with a 2005 4.2 with 50K miles ($23k).

Thoughts?

Thank you!!

the 04 2.7t should be about 16k maybe lower

id go with the 4.2 if you are going to be doing highway ... low cruising rpms and decent gas milage

Instead of 05 4.2, try to find a nicely equipped 3.2 you might like it

Default Is it easier?

Is the 3.2 easier to work-on and do some basic mods if I ever became so inclined?

Go with the 2001 4.2 and save the extra for maintenance. You'll need it on either car.

dont get the sline, if you want reliability get a 4.2 or a 2.8, If you want to mod get a 2.7t.

You can also save some of the money or buy an aftermarket warranty for parts and labor in the future.

Unless you need the interior room, I just picked up a real nice loaded A4 3.0 with MT6 for $13k. 69k miles.

4.2 is an amazing motor, our touareg has one. There is gobs of torque, plenty of top end and it will get 20 on the highway, which is pretty good for a big heavy suv. It gets about 13 towing our boat though The 4.2 sounds perfect for what you are discribing. There are simple mods avaible like a chip, exhaust and intakes but the only way to gain big power is a supercharger, unlike the 2.7T. The 4.2 has been around for a while and Audi has kept it the same for some reason, unlike the v6's. You could also look into S6's, only wagons but with 340hp and about $20K. What ever you do, uf you want reliability and cheaper maintinence, stay away from the turbo cars, unless of course you can find one like Gigis with lots of new parts!
