Default inaccurate mpg reading

Hi, my 2000 a6 2.8 does not accurately read the mpg on the screen. It's usually around 15.9 mpg no matter how I drive, even if I'm on the highway for a long period of time. Does any one know how to fix this. Can it be fixed using vag-com

I thought mine was doing this for a while (like two or three miles) and then i put it in tiptronic mode and played with the gears for a little bit (dropped it down to 4th then 3rd and then back up w/ the cruise around 60mph), for some odd reason it went back to normal. Maybe try this? And mind you i was getting around 18mpg going down a big hill which would normally register in the 50+ range, so i think it was pretty legitimate.

I am assuming that you don't have it in the Average MPG of course? (have to ask) Another thing i thought of was that maybe it was just warming up the engine (it was the first two/three miles of a hundred)? But that seemed a little silly and i don't know enough to know if that would be that big of a factor.

If you don't clear the MPG reading after each fill up, then you are getting combined average reading from the last time you reset the gauge. So if you haven't reset it for a few years, it will take really long time for the reading to change. Try resetting it after each fill up.

Or are you talking about the instantaneous reading?

I'm guessing he is reading the avg. reading as well?

Depress the bottom button on the windshield wiper lever for 2 seconds to reset

I had to reset mine...it was reading 3 average mpg when I bought it and like 5 for the next few days. It was sitting on the lot for like 6 months before I bought it lol.

yes I'm talking about the avg reading. I did reset it a few times, but it keeps going back to around 15, then it stops for a really long period of time. I guess I'll try resetting it more often. thanks

fwiw, I get about the same mpg average in my 2.8

have you tried switching display to show the actual driving mpg? There's 2 mpg readings like hxgaser stated
