Instrument Cluster Bulbs
1995 A6 Quattro. Just replaced five burned out Instument illumination bulbs. They are 1.1 watt, 12Volt ( clear bulbs with orange colored plastic backs). Also replaced the two tiny 12V bulbs ( purchased at Radio Shack, two for $1.49) in the instrument cluster Gear Selector display. These had to be soldered in place. Did not have to remove the steering wheel to get to any of the bulbs. I took some photos including the printed circuit board of the Gear Selector display. email me if U need to see the photos. 3 hour job including use of masking tape on light stalk, wiper stalk and other areas susceptible to scratching. Dealer wanted $300 labor plus $195 for a new Gear Selector Display plus price of bulbs ($2.75 ea. at dealer) . Other than pulling off the connector to the Gear Selector Display, all other wiring was left in place and attached to the Instrument Cluster. If you are patient, careful and know how to do fine soldering for the Gear Selector Display, this is not a difficult repair. Total parts cost was $16.00. Recently replaced two bulbs in the A/C heating display at center console. Also not difficult job..... Very nice to now be able to clearly see my fuel gauge, temp gauge, tach and gear display.

Here are some photos of the Gear Selector Display module and the associated Printed Circuit ( P.C. ) board. I'll upload some photos of the Cluster hanging from it's wiring later.
Before removing the module you must first pull out the wiring plug. The plug is plastic and is molded with a flexible clip on 2 edges. U will have to insert a fine bladed screw driver under these clips to realease them from the socket tab. Mark the top of the module so you can reinstall it correctly. It is possible to install it upside-down! You must then remove the 2 phillips head screws that hold the Gear Selector Module to the Cluster. Once the module is out of the car, take off the 2 phillips head screws holding the back of the module to the black plastic module housing. The P.C. board has a small rectangular tab on either side. Each tab fits into a slot on either side of the module housing. The plastic is a little thinner wall at that point. You will have to play around with a small screwdriver blade and also flex the plastic near the slot in order to get the P.C. board out of the housing. If you split the plastic housing where it is thin, don't worry. U can either glue the plastic or tape the P.C. board back in place.
I have some other photos showing the back of the cluster which clearly shows many of the cluster illumination bulbs.
