Just dropped almost 6 G's to repair my A-6
Solenoid was replaced a few months before the accident happened. That was my first question when we found out all this: was it related to that repair?
Same audi tech did both repairs and said when solenoid repair was done that it was run through all the codes and crap on the computer and everything came back normal. It's even noted on our paperwork.
I think it's one of those freak things that just so happened to me.

Wow....after seeing the "impact" of the hitch ball, I would definitely say that there's no chance in hell the engine work is related to the fender-bender.
Where you out of warranty when the adjuster solenoid AND the idler pulley were replaced?
According to a great guy on the forum, who happens to be an Audi tech :
I don't have a car with an adjuster solenoid, but obviously the "mishap" happened after the engine work performed by that audi tech you're mentioning. Obviously he took the TB off to replace the idler pulley, while he did the solenoid, so you should definitely look into talking with a lawyer. If he screwed up the timing or forgot to bolt/torque something right, then all that laundry list of blown engine replacement parts (performed post fender-bender) may have something to do with his/their fault.
However, the toughest part is to prove the connection between the solenoid/idler pulley work and the engine failure.
Otherwise it will remain a SOL one of those freakish mishaps you can do nothing about.

What services were performed that totaled $4,000!?
The book says that you have to remove and install the timing belt and cams to change out the tensioner, this of course isn't true and the dealer tech won't do this. You will be raped at the dealer, find a good euro repair shop to take care of your car. The prejudice from the dealer assumes that all owners of A8's have lots of money so they will try and sell you unnessary garbage that you don't need. Don't trust dealer technicians when you are out of warranty.

It looks like the damage was unrelated, but let's say a piece of that broken grill starts moving rearward. It could have wound up between, say, the timing belt and the pulley. Viola, your damage!
But first, go to the Audi dealer, since they off-loaded the work, and ask for a warranty adjustment. Be nice! They sent you there. They are responsible for any work that might have been covered by warranty work. Claim it is emmissions related (a cam IS emmissions related) which HAVE to be covered for 100,000 miles. Remember, be nice! Ask to speak to the Audi rep and tell him this story. Be nice!!! But, be firm. You want Audi to cover this repair. Be nice. Getting mad won't change anything. Then, take it to court. Be nice about it!!!! No threats. Just a, well, I dunno, I think I am supposed to get more than that, let's say we go see what a judge would say, you know, as an arbitrator, between friends. Be patient as it will take time for them to change their position, but I bet they will.
Good luck,
Bob

Bob, I totally agree with you...however
With all three TB covers being snug together (interlocked), I can't see how a piece of plastic would make its way in there.
But you never know, right?
Mom22 may have a different design in that 2005.
