Default Just purchased an A6. Should I buy a 3 yr warranty?

Hey I just purchased a 2002 A6 2.7T (sport 17" rims and manual) for $14,500 with 66579 miles on it. The dealership (non-audi) is offering a 3 yr / 36K warranty which covers anything that happens to the car which isn't part of the regular maintenance which costs $1990. Do you guys think it would be a good idea to purchase the warranty in case anything happens with the electronics or anything? I have about a week to decide, thanks guys.

(Car was originally $15,900 and got it for $14,500)

Anyone else have any opinions?

@James - What happened on your A6 that made you wish you would have gotten it?

I also have to replace my timing belt pretty much a few thousand miles after I get the car as it has not been done yet.

It depends, do you generally do your own maintenance? If no then shop around for a warranty.

Congrats on the new car

Thanks Jeff. I would not be doing my own maintenance (sure I would change the oil and whatnot but I really don't know too much about cars but I'm trying to learn since I'm still young). I might try to replace the timing belt myself when the time comes as that will save me at least a grand from bringing it in to the dealership but I know a mechanic that does a good job.

Is $1990 a fair price for a bumper to bumper warranty?

Also: If I buy test pipes with cats in them (aka AWE-Tuning cats with no test pipes), will I be able to pass inspection and keep them on my car year long?

That seems illogical to me. Why not put the money into an account that earns interest that you can draw from as needed? Be sure to do your homework on the warranty if you decide to go that route.

since buying my car I have had to do the following that made me wish I had bought a warranty:

Replaced the rear view mirror twice.
have the vacume hose on top of the engine replaced
replaced to coolant tank
2 hours diagnosis time and 2 alignments to diagnose and fix a pull to the right (which is still there)
As well as the following:
Replaced all 5 tires
T belt service
spark plugs replaced

Ext. Warranties won't cover tires, T-belts, or plugs (easy) - those are all maintenance items that are meant to be consumed. Warranties cover failures. Although Audi does sell Service agreements which cover scheduled maintenance such as brakes, plugs, etc, but that is a different type of Contract.

with a 2.7T I would get one but shop arond and do your homework. If you keep the car a while, I guarrantee you'll spend more than 1900 dollars on repairs... and you can use that as a sellinf point when you do seel it if still under warranty
